This piece is from a larger work entitled, "Borders," by local composer John Muehleisen. Heart-rending and hopeful, the soothing nature of the traditional Spanish lullaby is marked by the challenge of words in English spoken by detainees at the U.S./Mexico border. As immigration is a place of grave injustice in our current day, as we protest the reprehensible treatment of detainees during their arrest, detention, and deportation, this piece highlights the conflict of the sweetness of a lullaby with the harsh reality that so many humans are living in.
Join the Seattle Peace Chorus for our concert, Resilience: Dare to Dream, on Saturday 28 March, 7-8 pm at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church for this and other choral works that inspire justice, peace, and the hope for a brighter future. For those born after the tumult of the Civil Rights Era, the sounds of “We Shall Overcome” and other protest songs have become synonymous with the quest for equality and justice. Today’s peaceful protests for democracy will also be marked with the music of our day.
Continue your day of seeking justice and peace with the Seattle Peace Chorus as we celebrate resilience and the dream of a day when justice is accessible to all. Come hear music from Godspell and The Greatest Showman, from local composer, John Muehleisen, and renowned poets and composers Charles Anthony Silvestri, Rosephanye Powell, Rollo Dilworth, Dan Forrest, and Kyle Pederson. Saturday, March 28, 7-8 pm, join us at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church for Resilience: Dare to Dream. This will be a joyful and uplifting end to a day of protest and community. Some days it is difficult to believe that another world is possible. Come join us as we dream of a world, in the words of Langston Hughes:
I dream a world where one
No other one will scorn,
Where love will bless the earth
And peace its paths adorn.
Set to music by Kyle Pederson, this piece, like the others in this concert, will bring you to the place to which our hopes guide us—where love is the guiding light, where shared humanity and experience draw us together in community. Come dream with us of this world. Our shared dreams can make it happen. Dare to Dream, 28 March, after No Kings Day, 7-8 pm at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church.
