Career Contessa has done it again - check out this article by Danielle Doolan about different leadership styles. In your experience, what are effective leadership styles? What does impactful leadership look like? I have been in academic leadership for nearly fifteen years, and as I've grown and shifted, the most crucial lesson in leadership is to develop the ability to read the room. Because what's impactful for one person (in terms of leadership styles) is not for the other.

This article covers some great areas of effective leadership and lays out the pros and cons of various leadership styles (but remember, there is ALWAYS a gray area!); at the end of the day, impactful/effective leadership is about motivating people to meet a common goal, creating cultural buy-in, and establishing trust with the person taking on the (huge) responsibility of leadership.

Sometimes, the best way to determine your leadership style is to look around you at folks in positions of leadership. Who do you listen to? Why? Who do you trust? Why?
