Sharing this on behalf of our Partner Haiti Communitere. Please feel free to contribute to their work via this link: https://www.omprakash.org/global/haiti-communitere/donate

Haiti Communitere has not posted anything about the current situation in Haiti. The reality is, while we try to remain optimistic, things have been deteriorating in Haiti since 2018; in recent weeks the situation has gotten a lot worse. This is some of what is occurring in Haiti:
- there is no fuel anywhere in the country;
- a cholera outbreak has recently been declared. There are now dozens of patients;
- food and clean water are becoming increasingly scarce. Prisoners have already died of starvation and the population is increasingly hungry and angry.
- insecurity means farmers cannot get their produce to markets. While prices are skyrocketing in the city, they are crashing in the countryside.
- the main port is completely blocked by gangs and nothing can get out.
Many organizations, hospitals, and companies are closing. They cannot function without fuel. The company that produces clean water has paused its production. Haiti Communitere is open and here is an image of hope. These young men are engineering students. As they cannot get to their classes they are coming to Haiti Communitere to study. We are incredibly fortunate to have solar panels to help them.

At HC we believe in action. There is little to no media coverage of what is occurring in Haiti. If you would like to help please share this info. Tell people what is happening here. Our staff are thinking about what we can do to help our community in this situation and we will let you know once we have finalized our ideas. Please keep Haiti in your thoughts.

“Through following some spark inside of me, I have landed myself in Thailand, 7,660 miles from my home in Reno, Nevada. I had one vague goal when I left home: to grow. I hoped to see the world, and more than that, to experience and learn from the people living all around it. Fortunately, I found Omprakash as a catalyst to help me in this journey of eye-opening experience, and through them I connected with Warm Heart Worldwide. I am currently in my third week of working with and living at Warm Heart where I have been helping to teach their children English and plan sustainable systems for their resources here. Above all however, I have been learning. I have learned from the kids here, learned how to embrace and thrive in a way of life so different from what I am used to, learned skills that I never got to growing up in a city. Along with all of this, I am learning what my position is in the world -the privilege's that I have and how important it is to me that I utilize them for good.”

Widening Circles student Teya reflects on her own positionality during her time working with Omprakash Parter

How do you bridge the divide between groups of people after conflict? How do you help societies to heal? How might remembering help - and at what point might forgetting also allow societies to move forwards? EdGE Mentor Adam Abebe leads this discussion with Omprakash Partners Omladinska organizacija Svitac in Bosnia & Herzegovina and Remembering the Ones We Lost (omprakash.org/global/remembering-the-ones-we-lost) in South Sudan, and with the organization تعاطف للتنمية والتواصل اللاعنفي (Foundation for Development and Non-Violent Communication) in Syria

"I decided to do this during a community bereavement group that I have been co-facilitating this semester, as observing and taking notes is something I typically do during group. This time, I paid more attention to the smaller details, such as body language and changes in participants’ tones, in addition to the words they were saying. To respect privacy, I cannot share any of the field notes that include things that folks shared, but I wanted to reflect on the experience of doing this and paying such close attention to each small detail."

Colby Alfond Commons 2021-2022 student Angela practices the art of paying close attention and active listening. Read more here: https://www.omprakash.org/blog/in-observation

"As part of my civic engagement, I work as a student guide at the Colby Museum. Since freshman year, I have been trying to work with our collective team to find ways of reimagining the space of the museum to make it more accessible and approachable for anyone interested. Museums tend to feel exclusive and only for people that “belong” there, a stereotype I am trying to help expel. Through my work at the museum I have though a lot about other spaces that have been able to be reimagined both physically and psychologically. One thing that came to mind in Waterville are the mills both abandoned and renovated. Specifically down the street from the Alfond apartment, the Hathaway creative center. The mill building was renovated into the brewery apartments, creative spaces, workout facilities and others. Some friends and I stopped by Waterville Brewing, a space none of us had visited. Through classes and in some civic engagement conversations, the mills have come up as an example of gentrification and tension in the community."

Alfond Commons 2021-2022 student Sofia explores the changing landscape of Waterville, ME and how spaces can be reimagined. Read more here: https://www.omprakash.org/blog/reimagining-spaces-in-waterville
