On Saturday June 15th, Mother Nature went from “hot flashes to the chills”, along with a few periods of weeping and moaning, as the annual Shoreline Historical Museum / Golden Wheels Car Show was held.
With a light sprinkling of rain at the set up to partly cloudy with sun breaks the morning was off to a good start. But, as noon approached, so did the black storm clouds with a very heavy load of rain. Additional entertainment included a bit of lightning and thunder. Thankfully we had the Shoreline Museum building to take cover in. Following the down pour, we were treated to more sun for the rest of the afternoon.
Unfortunately, the bad weather throughout the entire Greater Seattle area kept many of the usual vehicles and viewers that attend the Golden Wheels Fraternity and the Shoreline Historical Museum event from attending.
A big “Thank You” to the members that attended and to those that stopped by to look at the cars and chat with the owners and drivers.
Hopefully 2025 will see a return to a more typical “Car Show “Weather Pattern” and we will see You there.

Hi,
A friendly reminder - It’s that time again for the annual Shoreline Historical Museum / Golden Wheels Car Show, this coming Saturday, June 15th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Due to the Museum’s changes in the use of the normal show area, this year the cars will be displayed across the street in the Windermere Real Estate office parking lot. It is on the corner of N 185th St. & Linden Ave. N in Shoreline, one block west of Aurora Ave N.
Always a fun time, and we hope to see you there!

On March 10th, over thirty Golden Wheels members gathered at the 125th Street Grill for their annual Golden Wheels Dinner Meeting. As always, those in attendance enjoyed being able to see and chat with members seldom seen because of the wide area within which they reside. President Hal Schlegel brought everyone up to date and acknowledged the Hall of Fame members in attendance.
Added to the gathering this year was a presentation by Jayce Graham, a young Quarter Midget race car driver sponsored by Jerry Day. Jayce talked about his racing history and experiences and had a short video presentation. He also had his car and some trophies on display. A nice young man with a good racing future ahead of him.
Following this, it was time for food, memories, sharing plans for the coming year and good old story telling. It was also very nice to have one of the best historians of Northwest and beyond motor racing history in attendance, Mr. Brian Pratt.
Attached are some photos of the event. Enjoy!

Several members of Golden Wheels had the pleasure of paging through “The Ghost Racetracks of Portland Oregon” at the July 8th monthly Saturday Breakfast Meeting. The new book by Bob Kehoe and Ralph Hunt covers Portland Speedway, Jantzen Beach Arena and Portland Meadows. Volume One – 1936 through 1955.
Being 479 pages thick with lots of photographs and an index that covers over 14 pages of all the places in the book you can find info on each person noted in the book, you are going to be entertained for more than a few evenings. And, the print is large enough to make it easy reading.
Personally, I didn't move to Washington till 1964 so I didn't see racing during the period covered. I did get to meet and know several of the drivers and others involved during that period though, and being able to see additional photos and take in much more information and history is great.
Those at the Breakfast enjoyed checking it out and I am enjoying looking through it, seeing the photos and reading some of the stories.
A big Thank You to Bob and Ralph for their donation of “The Ghost Racetracks of Portland Oregon” to Golden Wheels. This additional source of NW racing history is very much appreciated.
For anyone interested in purchasing a copy of their own, it is available through Barnes & Noble for $25 plus shipping.

Golden Wheels Hall of Fame member Hershel McGriff has been inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Congratulations Mr. McGriff! For your dedication and participation in NASCAR and other sanctioning bodies over several decades, it is well deserved. We look forward to seeing you on track seeking another win in your 100th year.

On June 18th, Golden Wheels joined the Shoreline Historical Museum with their annual Car Show. While it never rained, the forecasted possibility of non-friendly weather did have an effect on participation. Car count and public participation were both down from previous years. As the weather cleared and warmed, many visitors appreciated the chance to see the displays and chat with those that did participate.
The high-light of the day for the Golden Wheels members in attendance was the presentation of the "2021 Man Of The Year" award to our very deserving president Hal Schlegel. Unaware, Hal was totally surprised. Thanks go out to Dan Blair for doing all the work needed to make the presentation.
Sorry for the delay posting.
