Sometimes, a review reveals aspects of a work you've completely forgotten or didn't even fully realize. They key is having two talented, insightful writers involved, who can appreciate and process real history and fictional characters and make it all come alive. I'm lucky enough to work with an outstanding pair of such writers: Shahzoda Samarqandi, author of Mothersland, and Olga Zilberbourg, who wrote the smart, appreciative review linked below. Read the review! Read the book!

on Mothersland, a novel by Shahzoda Samarqandi, translated from the Russian by Shelley Fairweather-Vega – On the Seawall “A complex mixture of ‘bluntness and grace, directness and song’ to which W. S. Merwin attributes the unique tension and power of Thomas Wyatt’s verse attracts me devotedly to the work of Jessica Fisher and Carl Phillips.”

FairVega Translations and Russian Library Services stands with the brave people of Ukraine as they resist an unprovoked and unlawful invasion. We know the "Russian World" is diverse, multiethnic, and multinational, and we firmly believe the best aspects of Russian culture will eventually prevail over tyranny and violence. In our translation business, we'll continue to seek out and share with the world stories that challenge nationalist and colonialist mindsets. In the library business, we recommit to providing our library clients with Russian-language literature that reflects the full diversity of views of people who write and publish in Russian, so they can provide the Russian-speakers in their communities with the information and entertainment they seek.

Currently, logistical difficulties and other considerations make it impossible for FairVega to order books from suppliers in Russia and Ukraine. We will continue to fill orders from our existing inventory and US-based suppliers as long as possible. If your library's standing order is affected, we'll contact you directly soon.

Please join us in hoping for and working toward a quick end to the war and lasting peace to come. #нетвойне
