With $1 a day to crowd-fund the best social problem-solvers on the planet, we're changing how change happens. Who are you? Are you a nonprofit? It’s simpler.
We are a group of young professionals who believe there is an entire generation (and an entire generation’s worth of capital) ready and tired of waiting for a philanthropic revolution. Yes, we are a registered 501(c)3 organization. All donations are tax-deductible in the US. You can request a copy of our IRS determination letter by emailing [email protected]. How do you support yourselves? It ta
kes resources to run any great organization, so 10% of donations stay with GiveDaily as a reinvestment. We use those resources to scout and vet new partners, maintain and improve the website, and support our partners with value-adds like media and training. Who are the partners? We mean it when we say we fund the best problem-solvers in the world. Some of our partners are non-profits, some are social businesses, some are individuals and informal community organizations, but all of them are doing quality work to address meaningful problems in their communities. How do you choose them? Our most important criteria have to do with impact, innovation, transparency and community investment. Partners we choose to work with are deeply connected to their communities—and these communities are deeply invested in partner programs. They have demonstrated that the model produces sustainable positive impact. Our partners feel accountable for resource use/management and are committed to understanding (and openly sharing) the successes and failures of their undertaking with the community. Many of our partners come through leading incubators, fellowships and award programs like Ashoka, Skoll Foundation, Acumen Fund and Draper-Richards. Our relationships with these organizations are crucial not only because they meticulously vet candidates but because they provide a community of on-going mentorship, support and accountability. Can I suggest a partner? We love to learn about great work going on around the world! Just send an email with the name of the individual or organization, their contact information, a link to their website if they have one and a short explanation of why they belong on GiveDaily (hint: the criteria are above) to [email protected]. We have exceptionally high standards, but we do consider every suggestion that comes in. What makes this different than other crowdfunding sites? Donors make the choice and effort to buy in once, but feel the benefits every day. Partners get support based on the merit of their work, not the size of their Twitter following; and they can focus on that work instead of sweating the deadline of an all-or-nothing fundraising campaign. These departures from the typical crowdfunding model make it more suited for impactful philanthropy. It’s more sustainable. And it will do a lot more good a lot faster. What makes it different than other foundations or grant-making organizations? The biggest difference is that our grants are “unrestricted” (the grantees don’t have to spend the money on certain programs or in certain areas of the world or on certain kinds of goods or services) because we trust our partners to know how best to use the resources. What types of payment do you accept? We accept all major credit cards and Paypal. What about international donors? During the pilot, we can only accept donations from within the US. Please sign up to be notified of our full-scale launch, though, when we plan to support more than 20 foreign currencies. How do partners receive funds? We work with each partner to determine the most secure, convenient way to make their funds available as soon as possible. Whether the grant is made by bank transfer, money order or check, the funds are on their way within 5 business days of their funding day. Why just 30 days? The pilot is a beta launch for us—to make sure there is a “market” for this kind of organization before we bite off more than we can chew. We’re pretty sure there is, but we want to be as user-driven in building the site, apps, staff etc. as we can, so we’re gathering feedback and testing assumptions a little at a time. Then what? We’re planning another test period in the Fall (with a more developed site and a mobile app) and a full-scale launch Jan 1, 2014.
