Clean water, clean hands, clean toilets, and menstrual health support for kids in urban poverty — co-developed with local governments.

Splash is at the forefront of a growing movement to ensure that children in urban poverty have the resources they need to thrive and realize their full potential. We design child-focused water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), and menstrual health solutions with governments in some of the world’s biggest cities. Splash is transforming schools — and we’re just getting started. Help us make clean water t

Healthy habits are built, not assumed.

In Kolkata, Splash studied how handwashing behaviors changed in schools over time through Project WISE.

After the intervention:
• 79% of students washed with water and soap
• 87% washed both hands
• 90% were still washing with water and soap before eating after 18+ months

The takeaway: behavior change takes more than a message.

It takes water, soap, stations, routines, reminders, school leadership, and repeated reinforcement.

Tomorrow is Menstrual Hygiene Day.

Stigma does not disappear because one person gets a pamphlet. It changes when the people around girls — peers, teachers, parents, boys, and school leaders — understand that menstruation is normal and support matters.

That is why Splash’s menstrual health work includes the broader school and social ecosystem, not just individual students.

In Splash-supported schools in Addis Ababa, the average belief in menstruation-related myths decreased from 50% to 8%.

When schools create space for honest education and support, periods become easier to manage — and less difficult to talk about.

2 days until World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

Menstrual health is not only about access to products. It is also about access to accurate information.

Splash delivers age-appropriate education to help students understand puberty and menstrual health, normalize periods, reduce stigma, and address common misconceptions.

In Splash-supported schools in Addis Ababa, girls who said they felt able to manage their menstrual hygiene at school increased from 74% to 99%.

When girls have the information and support they need, they are better able to participate with confidence.

3 days until World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

For girls to manage their periods with dignity at school, products are only one part of the solution.

They also need safe, private toilets, clean water, handwashing stations, disposal options, and school environments where they feel supported.

Splash’s menstrual health work includes girl-friendly sanitation facilities designed with privacy, safety, water access, waste bins, doors that lock, hooks, shelves, and other details that help students manage menstruation with confidence.

Because period dignity starts with the spaces students use every day.

Digital access matters — especially when it comes to education.

For , we’re thinking about how open-access tools can help more schools, organizations, and communities put important health education into practice.

That includes menstrual health education.

yes.period, developed by Splash and WASH United, is a new open-access digital hub created to make period education easier to access, share, and use.

Because when more people have access to clear, practical information, more students can learn with confidence, dignity, and support.

Anyone can install a tap.

The real test is whether it still works years later.

In Kolkata, Splash and our long-term partner CLPOA helped schools move from one-time infrastructure to long-term ownership.

The approach was simple, but powerful: track how each school was doing, identify who needed extra help, and tailor support accordingly.

Some schools needed very little. Others needed refresher training, maintenance support, or more hands-on coaching. Over time, that targeted support worked.

Between 2023 and 2025, the number of top-performing schools rose from 130 to 345. By the end, only 17 schools remained in the two lower support tiers.

That is what “built to last” looks like in real life.

Not a ribbon cutting. Not a handoff and hope.

Data. Local maintenance. School leadership. Student behavior change. And a system that knows where to focus before small problems become big ones.

Congratulations to Angela Mwila Kapembwa of BORDA Zambia, a valued Project WISE II partner, on being recognized among the 100 African Women Leading Africa’s Water & Sanitation Future.

This recognition reflects the kind of technical, locally grounded leadership that helps WASH systems last.

As Angela says in the report:
“Innovation is not only about technology. It is about building systems that communities can sustain long after the project ends.”

We’re grateful to work alongside Angela and the BORDA Zambia team as we help build healthier school environments for children in Zambia.

Congratulations, Angela!
