Dear Mama,
It’s been six years today, and I still miss you like it was yesterday. The world has kept moving, but my heart still pauses when I think of you. You were more than a mother, you were a covering, a safe place, a steady voice of prayer and love.
So many people called you Mama Carr or Granny with the white hair, and you embraced every one of them. You mothered people from every background, every nationality, every walk of life. You prayed for them until change came. You loved them until healing started. You cared for them until they could stand again.
You grew up without a mother, yet you became the purest example of one. Only God could have filled you with that kind of love.
You were doing foster care before foster care had rules. You opened your home and your heart, and because of you, all of us your children learned to do the same. Adoption, fostering, stepparenting it’s in our DNA because it was in yours.
You taught us that once someone eats at our table, they are family for life.
Mama, thank you for giving us a table big enough for the world.
I am so grateful you were my mother.
And I miss you more than words can ever express.
