Cadillac Ranch • Lawrence, KS • 1993-2011

The Caddy was less a bar and more a climate-controlled rodeo hallucination duct-taped into downtown Lawrence, where mechanical bulls launched undergrads into low-orbit and the air smelled like spilled Coors and new denim. It operated on a simple ecosystem: boots, belts, bravado, repeat. You didn’t go there so much as get absorbed into it — emerging hours later glittered with sawdust, emotionally attached to strangers, and legally obligated to shout along to country songs you did not previously know. Cadillac Ranch didn’t close. It simply kicked open the saloon doors of the afterlife and kept line dancing somewhere beyond city limits.

Bardo Rodeo wasn’t a bar so much as a fermented hallucination inside a former car dealership. It was said to be the largest brewpub in the Western Hemisphere. Inside: only their own beers, brewed in mysterious volumes and alarming strengths — fruit things, dark things, barleywine things, seasonal experiments that may or may not have achieved sentience. No bottles, no liquor, no wine. Just cavernous space, free-range weirdness, and a Buick frozen forever in the act of entering through a window.

Royal Palm Tavern
Collegetown, Ithaca • 1941-2012
The Palms was the go-to watering hole for a wide range of folks – students and professors from Cornell and Ithaca College, staff from neighboring businesses, and construction workers just getting off their shifts. Whether you were there to celebrate, drown your sorrows, or just hang with friends it became a fixture of the community for over 70 years. When the college kids took off for break, the locals filled it up with plenty merriment making it an unexpected hotspot on Christmas.

ROCK ISLAND
Denverites looking for an alternative to the cheesy nightclubs and mainstream music venues found their raucous salvation in Rock Island. Where else can you find raves, cage dancing, and a toast bar all in one place? Opened on Halloween in 1986, Rock Island became a centerpiece of the seedy, vibrant underground nightlife scene. When up-and-coming DJ’s weren’t spinning New Wave, House, Techo, and Hip-Hop, you’d find bands like Skinny Puppy, The Flaming Lips, and Lush destroying on stage.

R Place • Seattle • 1986 - 2021

Re-bar wasn’t just a bar; it was a chaotic, glitter-streaked frolic-factory where grungeheads, drag-queens, poets, punks, and all-around misfits, collided in the best way possible. Gay? Straight? Who cares? This legendary Seattle hot spot wasn’t afraid to get weird. It practically demanded it—hosting everything from Nirvana’s infamous “Nevermind” album release party (where the band got kicked out!) to over-the-top drag shows and underground raves. It was a place where you could dance until the walls sweat, sip cheap beer under moody neon lights, and feel like you were part of something raw, real, and unapologetically rebellious. Re-bar may have closed, but its spirit still thrashes in the hearts of those who dared to get strange on the dance floor.
