Growing up in Hawai’i, I thought everyone who left was moving to Vegas.
Seriously…
Anytime someone moved off island, you’d hear…
“Yeah, moving to Vegas.”
Hawai’i’s unofficial 9th Island.
And honestly, I didn’t think much about Washington.
Then I ended up moving here.
Now, almost 10 years later, I realize there was a whole part of the country I barely knew existed.
And that’s what I wish more people in Hawai’i knew before deciding where they’re going next.
âś… Washington has options.
Different cities, suburbs, small towns, acreage, waterfront, and neighborhoods with completely different lifestyles.
âś… You get access to a different kind of outdoors.
Mountains, lakes, rivers, beaches, islands, trails, and some incredible weekend destinations.
âś… You get actual seasons.
The first fall colors and snow were a completely different experience for someone who grew up with Hawai’i weather year-round.
âś… There are more communities to choose from.
You can live closer to the city, further north, south, east, or even outside Washington and still have access to the greater Pacific Northwest.
✅ And there’s a growing Hawai’i community here.
Washington isn’t Hawai’i, but you’d be surprised how many people from home you’ll run into once you start putting yourself out there.
I’m not saying everyone in Hawai’i should move to Washington.
And I’m definitely not saying Washington is better than Vegas.
They’re just completely different lifestyles.
But after 23 years of only knowing Hawai’i, moving here showed me something I didn’t understand back then:
Sometimes you don’t know what’s out there until you give yourself a chance to experience it.
Hawai’i will always be home for me.
But Washington became home too.
