Where’s you go-to place for a local adventure? My wife and I love going to Leavenworth. We often stay at the Enzian Inn, a place of which I have fond childhood memories.

I’m using my free time to draw maps that have already been made. 🙃 Here’s why:

When I was a teenager in the 2000’s, I was driving my sisters home from a party at night in my parents’ minivan. But at one turn at the top of a hill, I went straight. I was supposed to go right. As soon as my path diverged from the one and only route home I knew, I was completely lost. It should be simple — do a U-turn and then go left, right? But my brain takes seconds to lose track of where I am. We finally made it home 2 hours later (for reference, we started 10 minutes away). I was furious. With myself.

To this day, nothing’s changed. My brain has a terrible sense of direction. My own neighborhood is a labyrinth, and I’m no Theseus.

But I hold a really strong belief, that has pushed me forward in countless areas in my life: Practice beats talent. Always.

So I’ve set a goal this year to memorize where everything is in the Seattle area, and know it better than 99% of its occupants. I’m starting with the cities.

I drew this map in a vector art program so that I can block out individual layers and quiz myself on cities, highways, and the like, and get more specific as my knowledge increases.
