The Anatomy of an Effective Fundraising Letter
You believe strongly in your cause; however it won’t amount to much unless you can instill that same passion in your potential donors. Getting your point across is important, but it’s not always easy. That’s where understanding how to write an effective fundraising letter comes into play.
I’ve found it’s best to break your fundraising letter down into three different (but equally important) segments:

Watch Out! Your Non-Profit Could be Missing a Pot of Gold
Lots of times, people (and non-profits) don’t see the true value of what they have. They take things for granted, and underestimate the capacity of the people they are closest to.
Here’s an example:

Sitting down to write a direct mail fundraising letter can be a daunting task, particularly for someone who only does it once or twice per year. It can seem like your whole fundraising goal is riding on every word you write, and the self-inflicted pressure often builds up into a form of writer’s block.

How we say "thank you" matters
Thanking donors and supporters is to essential any fundraising program. But, not all “thank you”s are equal. A well crafted “thank you” can add meaning to a donor’s life and deepen their connection with your organization.

For medium sized non-profits, building an endowment, however small, can mean the difference between sustainability and an early demise. Endowment funds are particularly important when lean economic times hit, as they provide a base source of funding that may allow the organization to carry on, even when annual donations dry up for a year or two.

We all have lapsed donors. These are donors who used to give to your organization, but for one reason or another, they have stopped giving. (Generally, someone isn’t considered a “lapsed donor” until they have stopped giving to your non-profit for more than one year).
You may have 1 lapsed donor, or you may have 10,000 lapsed donors. Either way, your lapsed donors are incredibly important to your ongoing fundraising success.
