This neonatal presentation combines macrosomia, macroglossia, and a specific metabolic derangement. Test your clinical reasoning and see if you can identify the correct syndrome.

A macrosomic newborn male delivered at 38 weeks gestation presents with profound, persistent hypoglycemia shortly after birth. Physical examination is notable for an enlarged tongue protruding from the mouth, a reducible midline abdominal wall defect at the base of the umbilicus, and distinctive linear creases on the earlobes.

What is the MOST likely diagnosis?

A. Congenital Hypothyroidism
B. Simpson-Golabi-Behmel Syndrome

One of the most important things to know about BWS:

Early monitoring saves lives.

Simple screenings in childhood can detect risks earlyโ€”
and change outcomes completely.

Awareness isnโ€™t just informationโ€”
itโ€™s protection ๐Ÿ’š

04/06/2026

Even though Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS) is rareโ€”
affecting about 1 in 10,000 births worldwideโ€”

that still means thousands of families across the globe ๐ŸŒ

And with IVF, the likelihood is higher.

Rare doesnโ€™t mean small.
It means often unseen.

Letโ€™s change that ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›

Did you know?

Children with Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS) often need
regular tumor screening in early childhood.

This may include:
โ€ข Ultrasounds
โ€ข Blood tests

Early monitoring can detect risks soonerโ€”
and save lives ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›

Awareness makes this possible.

April is National Cancer Control Month, a time to focus on improving survival rates for children with cancer.

The facts:
๐Ÿ‹Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children in the U.S.
๐Ÿ‹ 10โ€“18% of childhood cancers are linked to an inherited genetic predisposition.

Advances in genetic testing are helping doctors identify cancer risks earlierโ€”so families can get the monitoring, prevention strategies, and care they need.

๐Ÿ‹Most families donโ€™t know until after diagnosis that their child has a predisposition. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation-funded researchers are working to change that by studying how early screening could make a difference: alexslemonade.org/where-money-goes/research/newborn-screening-early-childhood-cancer-predisposition-syndromes

This month, letโ€™s continue to spread awareness, support families, and fund the research needed to treat childhood cancer more effectively.
