This song is about being honest about your darkest moments. Being vulnerable about what they’re actually like not the brave face you put on but the messiness behind that mask. This song reminds me of how far I’ve come and how hard I’ve worked for better mental health and a better life. To my beautiful friends I’ve lost because your dark times were just too much for you to take anymore, I miss you and I love you. This song is for you.

If you’re struggling with something right now, please don’t put on a brave face. Please tell someone how you actually feel, how heavy that weight on your chest really is, how dark things actually are, how you need someone to help you find your way out because it’s getting to be too much to handle on your own. I’ve lost three people this year because they couldn’t handle it on their own. You don’t need to be strong for anyone else, I know it’s scary and you don’t want to disappoint anyone but give them a chance to show up for you, sometimes people just need to know that’s what you need.

To celebrate Pride this year I want to talk about mental health. What people don’t hear as much about when talking about the Qu33r Community is how much we take care of each other. We really do save each others lives. We spend so much time hiding away who we really are as we learn that most of the world wishes we didn’t exist. But the thing is when we talk to each other we realize how powerful and beautiful each of our stories are. How powerful and resilient we are as a collective. SHALLOWS asks the question “Tell me why we downplay our pain as a way to survive, why we think fighting alone’s the only way to stay alive”. This song is dedicated to my beautiful qu33r family that has taught me it’s ok to share yourself, it’s ok to be messy and hard to deal with, it’s ok to not fit in a nice neat little box. I wish we were all a little less afraid to talk about the depths of what we’re going through. I think it could not only make us feel so much less alone but potentially save someone’s life.

Thank you to all the people who’s vulnerability, strength and resilience has saved my life. I hope to return that act of love.
