Social Murder in the Working-Class

"Social murder" is a term coined by Friedrich Engels in 1845 in his work "The Condition of the Working-Class in England." It describes the unnatural death of individuals due to social, political, or economic oppression rather than direct violence. Engels argued that when society creates conditions that inevitably lead to premature deaths among the oppressed class, it is committing murder just as surely as an individual who directly causes death. These structures may include inadequate housing, poor working conditions, lack of access to healthcare, and insufficient nutrition, all of which can contribute to severe health issues and early mortality.

Engels argued that these deaths are not accidental but are the direct result of the policies and practices of those in power, who knowingly create and maintain these oppressive conditions. Housing Instability: Many people experience homelessness or live in substandard housing conditions due to the lack of affordable housing options. This situation can lead to health problems and a decreased quality of life.

Environmental Racism: Marginalized communities are often exposed to higher levels of pollution and environmental hazards, which can cause chronic health issues and shorter lifespans.

Criminal Justice System: The U.S. has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world, disproportionately affecting people of color and those from low-income backgrounds. The prison system often fails to rehabilitate individuals and instead perpetuates cycles of violence and poverty.

Addressing these issues requires systemic change and a commitment to social justice. By recognizing and addressing the root causes of inequality, society can work towards creating more equitable conditions for all individuals.
