Stop waiting for "maturity" to kick in. 🧠✨
We often hear parents and teachers say, "They’re so smart, if they would just TRY harder they’d get it done."
But here is the truth grounded in neuroscience: Executive Functioning is a set of skills, not a reflection of a child's willpower. Think of Executive Functioning (EF) as the "Air Traffic Control" system of the brain. It manages:
✅ Working Memory (Holding onto instructions)
✅ Inhibitory Control (Resisting distractions)
✅ Cognitive Flexibility (Switching gears when things change)
When a student struggles to start a task or keep their backpack organized, it isn’t "laziness"—it’s a sign that their internal control tower is still under construction. 🏗️
The good news? Because of neuroplasticity, these skills can be taught. At the Chartwell Teaching Institute, we move beyond the "Why won't they?" and focus on the "How can we scaffold?"
By externalizing time, reducing cognitive load, and using predictable routines, we can build the external supports a child needs while their "internal pilot" is still in training.
Want to build a better EF toolkit for your classroom or home?

Why "just practice more" isn't the answer for Dysgraphia. ✍️🚫
We’ve all seen that student: the one who can tell you a brilliant, complex story out loud, but when asked to write it down, produces only three words after thirty minutes of labor.
This is the "Writing Bottleneck."
Dysgraphia is a specific learning disability that affects written expression. It isn’t just "messy handwriting"—it’s a breakdown in the complex neurological relay race between: 🧠 Orthographic Coding (Visualizing letters in the mind) 💪 Graphomotor Output (The motor skills to move the pencil) 📝 Executive Function (Organizing thoughts into sentences)
When a child has dysgraphia, the act of simply forming letters takes up 100% of their cognitive energy. There is nothing left over for spelling, grammar, or—most importantly—their brilliant ideas.
At the Chartwell Teaching Institute, we teach educators how to widen that bottleneck. By using strategies like: ✨ Speech-to-Text tools to bypass the motor struggle. ✨ Scribe techniques to capture the "knowing" without the "doing." ✨ Orthographic mapping to strengthen the brain’s "letter-picture" memory.
Let's stop focusing on the pencil and start focusing on the person. When we remove the motor barrier, we unlock the genius beneath.

When math anxiety walks in, working memory walks out. 🧠🛑
We’ve all seen it happen. A student who fully understands a math concept during a relaxed, one-on-one discussion suddenly freezes when a timed quiz is placed on their desk. Tears start flowing, the pencil drops, or behavioral outbursts take over.
It's easy to assume they just "don't get the math." But neuroscience tells a completely different story.
Math anxiety isn’t a reflection of a student's intelligence; it is a neurological event. When a child experiences math panic, their amygdala (the brain's emotional alarm system) takes over. This effectively hijacks the prefrontal cortex—the exact area responsible for the working memory needed to solve math problems.
In short: Their brain is in survival mode, not learning mode. 📉
At the Chartwell Teaching Institute, we believe that breaking the cycle of math anxiety requires a shift in our approach. To unlock the math brain, we must first soothe the anxious brain.
In our upcoming 1-Day Workshop, we teach educators how to:
✨ De-escalate the Amygdala: Use low-stakes, multi-sensory techniques that build conceptual confidence.
✨ Reduce Cognitive Load: Scaffold math tasks so working memory isn't overwhelmed.
✨ Shift the Culture: Move classrooms from a culture of speed to a culture of depth.
Let's change the narrative around math from fear to fluency.

Upcoming 1-Day Workshops:
✏️ Dysgraphia: Writing Within (Between) The Lines
Move beyond "messy handwriting" to understand the neurological roots of writing struggles. You’ll leave with evidence-based strategies for transcription, orthographic coding, and the tools to help students finally get their thoughts onto the page.
👩🔬 Rethinking Math Anxiety
Discover why the "thinking brain" often gets hijacked by the "primitive brain" during math. We’ll explore multi-sensory techniques and diagnostic prescriptive methods that build conceptual confidence and reduce the emotional barriers to math mastery.
📓 Executive Functioning Across the Grades
Executive functions are the strongest predictors of success—surpassing even IQ. This workshop provides a common language and concrete classroom routines to support working memory, task initiation, and cognitive flexibility without relying on pull-out services.

🗣️ "As someone who has spent years in the classroom and in teacher training, I’ve seen firsthand that the most confident educators aren't the ones with the most binders—they’re the ones who have had the space to practice, fail, and refine their craft in a safe, mentored environment. I hope to see you in the lab this summer." --Jodi Amaditz

To all the educators who are balancing the "Science of Reading" with the art of motherhood—this day is for you. 💐
At the Chartwell Teaching Institute, we see the incredible dedication it takes to nurture a classroom of learners all day and then head home to nurture your own. Whether you are practicing phonemic awareness with your students or reading bedtime stories to your kids, you are shaping the future, one word at a time.
Today, we celebrate the teacher-moms in our community. Your patience, your expertise, and your heart make a world of difference in both your home and your classroom.
Wishing you a day of rest, joy, and appreciation. Happy Mother’s Day! ✨

Let’s talk about neurodiversity! 🧠✨
Understanding dyslexia goes far beyond just "letters getting mixed up." It’s about how a brain is wired, how a student manages their emotions, and how they navigate the world.
We’re so excited for our Demystifying Dyslexia workshop this July at the Chartwell Teaching Institute! Join Molly Bricker and Billy Swift for three days of deep dives into diagnosis, executive functioning, and the powerful connection between ADHD and embodied learning.
📍 Where: Seaside, CA 🗓️ When: July 21–23, 2026
It’s time to move from "misunderstood" to "empowered." See you there? 🏆
