Farmers are finding a beautiful way to protect their crops while cutting back on chemical pesticides — by planting colorful rows of wildflowers right alongside their fields. These vibrant strips of poppies, daisies, cornflowers, and other blooms do more than make farmland look picturesque; they attract beneficial insects like ladybugs, hoverflies, bees, and parasitic wasps that help keep crop-damaging pests under control naturally. Instead of relying only on sprays, farmers are using nature’s own balance to support healthier crops, protect pollinators, and create more biodiversity across the landscape. What looks like a simple row of flowers is actually a living defense system — a reminder that sometimes the smartest solutions in agriculture come not from fighting nature, but from working with it.

Musings from the Front Porch…
I recently came upon some wicker-like furniture at a local consignment store. I excitedly purchased it without perusing the store for more treasures. These chairs and table have created a relaxing retreat on the Pink House front porch that has melded into an afternoon and evening ritual for me and the pups. I start by lighting the mosquito repellent incense and spraying some Off around my ankles, just in case. For the most part, we just sit and listen to the evening symphony of birds, crickets, and frogs. The train bellows its way through town right on cue, like a solo from the percussion section. Sometimes I read a book. Sometimes I work on whatever sitting task I have at that particular time. This week it’s VBS prep.
Regardless of what I decide to do, I am always reminded of childhood afternoons at my Pa and Nanny’s house in West Point. I remember my summers there as if they were a few years ago and not the actual decades that they are. During my nap time, I would lay in her bedroom with all the windows open wide, because there wasn’t AC. I would dreamily think to myself that the bird songs were my lullaby.
