Happy Feast Day of Saint Anthony of Padua! Buona Festa di Sant’Antonio di Padova!

Sant’Antonio is popularly known as the patron saint for the recovery of lost items. Sant’Antonio was a Franciscan friar born in Lisbon, Portugal, who spent most of his adult life in Italy. When he was in Morocco spreading the Gospel, he became ill and was sent back to Portugal. However, his ship was blown off course, and arrived in Sicily instead! From there he traveled up to Tuscany to recover. He stayed in Italy until his death at the age of 35 on June 13, 1231. In his 35 years, St. Anthony was a master of scripture, a remarkable orator, and a miracle worker. This is why every year on June 13th Italians and Italian Americans celebrate the Festa di Sant’Antonio (Feast Day of Saint Anthony). He is celebrated as the patron saint of Padova (Veneto) and his relics located in the Basilica attract hundreds of visitors every year, especially around his feast day. Every year in Padova Sant’Antonio is celebrated with a procession in traditional costumes, a torchlight procession on the river Bacchiglione and fireworks.

Be sure to wish “Buon Onomastico” (Happy Name Day) to all the people in your life with the names: Anthony, Antonio, Antonia, Antonietta, Antoinette, Antonella, and Antonello!
