Today is the anniversary of the Salvadoran Martrys, who were brutally murdered in El Salvador on November 16th, 1989, for standing up against the government and advocating for the poor. Swipe to read about the contributions and backgrounds of each of the victims, who gave their lives while acting as men and women for and with others, and embodied true Jesuit values and beliefs.

Please pray for our Jesuit brothers and their families, the Order across the globe, and the people of Mexico 🙏🏻

Two Jesuits assassinated in Mexico, 20 June 2022

Statement of the Provincial of Mexico
“It is with deep sorrow and a sense of anguish that I inform you that in the afternoon of 20 June, in Cerocahui, Tarahumara, Jesuit Fathers Javier Campos SJ and Joaquín Mora SJ were murdered while trying to defend a man who was seeking refuge in the church and who was being pursued by an armed person.
This happened in the context of the violence that this country is experiencing.
At this moment, we are working with the federal and state authorities to ensure the safety of our Jesuit brothers Esteban Cornejo SJ, Jesús Reyes SJ, and Jesús Zaglul SJ, and the pastoral team of the parish.
We publicly condemn this tragedy and demand a prompt investigation and safety for the community. We will keep you informed about the next actions that we, as the Mexican Jesuit Province, will be taking.
I ask you to join us in prayer for them.”
Luis Gerardo Moro Madrid SJ - Provincial, Jesuits of Mexico

Statement of Father Arturo Sosa, Superior General of the Society of Jesus
“I am shocked and saddened by this news. My thoughts and prayers are with the Jesuits in Mexico and the families of the men. We have to stop violence in our world and so much unnecessary suffering.”

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen
