Today we honor Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom, resilience, and hope.

At WRC, we believe that creating safer, healthier communities begins with learning from our history, listening to one another, and working toward a future where every person is treated with dignity, respect, and equity.

Today is World Environment Day, it was established by the United Nations to raise global awareness about pressing environmental issues and to inspire collective, actionable steps toward protecting the planet.

What a perfect sunny Friday to get out in the garden and plant some veggies or flowers! 🥕🌶️🥒🌻🌷

With the school year slowly wrapping up, our Prevention Educators are going through some of the evals from the year. The 7th grade students learn that just because someone doesn't say "no", that doesn't make it a yes. Coercion is the act of pressuring someone to do something that they don't want to do - this can be by physical force, verbal pressure or drugs or alcohol.

This 7th grade student learned that in order to have consent it need to be a clear enthusiastic yes.

We tell young people:
“You can come to me.”
“I’m always here.”
“Tell a trusted adult.”

But those words only matter if our actions match.

Being a trusted adult means:
Believing before investigating
Staying calm when things are hard to hear
Not protecting reputations over people
Getting support if you don’t know what to do

Because when adults minimize, dismiss, or defend harmful behavior, young people notice.

And next time? They might not tell anyone.

If you’re a teen reading this:
If an adult didn’t show up for you, that says something about their readiness, not your worth.

If you’re an adult reading this:
We can do better...and we have to.

Because “help is always available” should be something young people experience, not just something they’re told.

We say “talk to a trusted adult” all the time.

But what does that actually mean?

A trusted adult is someone who:
* Listens without interrupting or blaming
* Takes your concerns seriously
* Doesn’t make excuses for harmful behavior
* Helps you figure out next steps
* Respects your safety

A trusted adult is NOT someone who:
* Says “are you sure?” in a way that makes you doubt yourself
* Defends the person who hurt you
* Tells you to just ignore it
* Makes it about their own discomfort

Being an adult doesn’t automatically make someone “safe” … and if someone responds in a way that feels off, confusing, or dismissive… trust that feeling.

You’re allowed to find someone who shows up better.

🌟 Teacher Appreciation Shoutout! 🌟

This week (and every week), we’re celebrating the incredible teachers in Lackawanna and Susquehanna County who partner with WRC to bring prevention programs into their classrooms. 💙

Thank you for welcoming us into your schools, for sharing your space, your students, and your expertise. Because of YOU, we’re able to help students build the tools they need for healthy relationships, strong boundaries, and brighter futures.

Your support makes our work possible — and we are so grateful to be part of your village. 🍎💬👩‍🏫

Because WRC has been a fixture in the community for 50 years, we are finding that not everyone has quite caught on to our new name, "WRC".

The name "WRC" honors our previous name and our 50 year history, as well as our future.
