Schenectady Police Make Gun Arrest Utilizing Drone Technology

On May 27, 2026, at approximately 9:15 a.m., members of the Schenectady Police Department responded to the area of 41 Steinmetz Homes for a report of a person with a weapon after a
female victim reported that a male suspect had menaced her with a handgun.

A Schenectady Police Department drone pilot deployed the department drone to the incident location and quickly located the suspect fleeing the area. The drone pilot provided responding
officers with the suspect’s location from above and observed the suspect attempting to conceal himself in a backyard.

Another officer assisted the drone pilot and utilized the drone’s speaker system to issue verbal commands to the suspect. Through the coordinated use of the drone technology, officers were
able to gain the suspect’s compliance and direct him to place his hands in the air prior to officers on the ground taking him into custody.

The suspect was safely taken into custody without further incident. Officers subsequently recovered a handgun in a nearby yard shortly afterward.

This illegal firearm is one of five removed from the streets of Schenectady in just the last week. Our officers continue to do tremendous work through a combination of technology, proactive
policing, strong investigative work and the use of de-escalation techniques to make our community safer every day.

Arrested in connection with this incident was:

Julio R. Duran, 25 yea-old-male, from Schenectady:

• Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (2 Counts) — Class C Felony
• Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree — Class D Felony
• Menacing in the Second Degree — Class A Misdemeanor

The successful apprehension highlights the effectiveness of the department’s drone program and coordinated response efforts. Without the use of the drone during this incident, the suspect likely
would have escaped prior to officers arriving on scene, and the handgun may have remained in his possession.
