Microsoft confirmed that a bug in the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool (MCT) is causing it to malfunction on Windows 10 devices just before the Windows 10 end-of-life (EOL) date of October 14, 2025. The latest version of the MCT, released on September 29, 2025, may close unexpectedly without an error message when a user attempts to run it on a Windows 10 PC to create installation media for Windows 11.
What happened
The bug: An update to the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool, version 26100.6584, introduced a flaw that causes the tool to crash on Windows 10 devices.
The timing: The issue was confirmed by Microsoft on October 10, 2025, just days before Windows 10 officially reached its EOL. This created a challenge for users looking to upgrade to Windows 11 via a clean installation using the tool.
The symptom: When a user attempts to run the MCT on a Windows 10 machine, the program may start but then close abruptly without any explanation.
