Overall mosquito numbers fell last week after reaching their highest level of the year. This fall was primarily due to the large decline in nuisance mosquitoes which exhibited a 75% drop from the previous week. The southern house mosquito showed a drop of 15% over the previous week, but still outnumbered all other mosquito species by a rather large margin. Field crews will assess wetlands for larvae from rains that passed through our area over the past weekend, and treat any as needed. Nuisance mosquito numbers reached their highest level of the year last week, with almost equal numbers of brown salt marsh and black salt marsh mosquitoes being caught. However, over 88% of these mosquitoes were captured in the eight traps deployed on the South Carolina side of the Savannah River, or on Hutchinson Island. The southern house mosquito is still outnumbering all other mosquito species on a weekly basis, although virus has not been detected from any of the samples tested from our region since early April.
