Upward Notes brings classical music out of the concert hall and into the community while teaching and encouraging well-being for the audience and performer.
🎶 Music belongs to everyone. Upward Notes is a community-based initiative that brings the healing power of music into everyday spaces—beyond the concert hall and into the heart of our communities. Currently based in Sarasota, Florida, Upward Notes creates shared musical experiences in shelters, assisted living homes, animal rescues, and more. Our performances support both audience and artist mental health, grounded in empathy, connection, and presence. We’re a volunteer-powered, nonprofit organization committed to using music as a tool for transformation, well-being, and joy.

Faces of Upward Notes: John Miller
Meet John Miller.
John is a member of the Upward Notes Board, but if you’ve spent any time around our gatherings, chances are you’ve seen him doing much more than sitting on a board.
Sometimes he’s making music. Sometimes he’s helping make a gathering happen. And sometimes he’s simply sitting alongside the people we came to meet—which might be the most Upward Notes thing of all.
Because this organization has never really been about putting musicians on one side of the room and an audience on the other.
It’s about what happens when we gather.
As we head into a new season, we want to introduce you to more of the people who help make Upward Notes what it is.

This summer, we spent a lot of time thinking about why we gather.
Joy.
Participation.
Belonging.
Curiosity.
Music.
"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow."
Tomorrow is September.
A new season is getting closer, and there are more gatherings ahead.
Your monday can be intense. Work! School! Traffic! Meetings! What can we
do to help "keep our minds right"?
Engage with the people, be present for each other, and, of course, listen to music on the way. 🎶🌼

Turns out, participation works both ways.
We invite people to sing, play, move, and make music with us. Something happens—we start smiling more, listening differently, and getting caught up in the moment with each other.

At the end of August, Upward Notes is stepping into a week of fundraising to help build our next season of gatherings.
We’re growing the spaces where music can do what it does best—
bring people back to themselves, and back to each other.
Schools. Shelters. Care communities. Recovery spaces.
Anywhere people gather and need something steady, human, and real.
This is what we’re building toward.
And we can’t do it alone.
