STRAT-O-MATIC WORLD SERIES – SEASON 14
Clash of Titans: ’86 Mets vs. ’89 A’s
In what promises to be a hard-fought and electric showdown, Season 14 of the Strat-O-Matic World Series brings together two of baseball’s most iconic squads: the 1986 New York Mets and the 1989 Oakland A's. With a best-of-five format set to determine supremacy, all eyes turn to a matchup defined by contrasting styles, powerhouse rosters, and the strategic minds behind them.
The Competitors
The Oakland A’s will be guided by the duo of Mike and Lance, a partnership known for calculated aggression and deep bullpen management. Across the diamond stands John, piloting the Mets with a flair for clutch decision-making and an ability to squeeze every ounce of production from his lineup.
Team Breakdown
The 1986 Mets are remembered for their relentless offense, gritty at-bats, and never-say-die attitude. Expect speed on the bases, pressure on the defense, and timely hitting that can turn any inning into chaos.
Meanwhile, the 1989 A’s bring raw power and dominant pitching. With a lineup capable of changing the game with one swing and a pitching staff built to shut opponents down, Oakland enters the series as a formidable force.
Keys to the Series
For John’s Mets, success will hinge on manufacturing runs and keeping Oakland’s sluggers in check. Defensive ex*****on and bullpen timing could make or break their chances.
Mike and Lance’s A’s, on the other hand, will look to impose their will early—leaning on power hitting and strong starting pitching to control the pace of the series. If they can dictate the tempo, they may prove difficult to overcome.
What’s at Stake
Beyond the championship title, this series represents bragging rights, legacy, and a place in Strat-O-Matic history. With three skilled managers and two legendary teams, Season 14 is shaping up to be one for the ages.
First pitch is set—let the battle begin.
---
GAME 1 – WORLD SERIES OPENER
Oakland Coliseum – Oakland, California
Game 1 of the Season 14 World Series opened in Oakland, as the 1989 A’s hosted the 1986 Mets in front of a charged and expectant crowd.
With Mike and Lance’s A’s holding home-field advantage, and John’s Mets stepping into a hostile environment, the stage was set for a classic showdown to begin the series.
What followed was a dramatic back-and-forth battle that turned into an instant classic.
Mid-Game Breakthrough – Mets Strike First
The game remained scoreless until the top of the 6th inning, when the Mets finally broke through. With the bases loaded, Keith Hernandez showed patience at the plate, drawing a clutch walk to force in the first run of the series and give New York a 1-0 lead.
Moments later, with the bases still loaded, Mitchell delivered again for the Mets, lining a single into right field to bring home another run and extend the lead to 2-0.
Major Turning Point – Canseco Injury
In a shocking development during the 6th inning, Oakland star Jose Canseco was forced to leave the game with a severe injury after scraping and badly cutting his finger on the edge of a metal dugout bench. The injury will sideline him for the remainder of the series, dealing a significant blow to the A’s lineup. He was replaced by Stan Javier.
Mets Add On
In the 7th inning, Mookie Wilson helped the Mets pad their lead. Reaching on an error, he drove in a run to make it 3-0 New York, putting Oakland in a deep hole heading into the late innings.
Eighth-Inning Explosion – Parker Delivers
Just when it looked like the Mets were in control, the A’s came roaring back in the bottom of the 8th. Dave Parker stepped to the plate and crushed a dramatic three-run home run, instantly tying the game at 3-3 and electrifying the Oakland crowd.
Extra-Inning Heroics
The game pushed into extra innings, with both teams trading zeroes in a tense battle of nerves and bullpen ex*****on.
Then, in the bottom of the 11th inning, Tony Phillips delivered the decisive blow. With the game on the line, Phillips lined a walk-off RBI single, scoring the winning run and giving Oakland a thrilling 4-3 victory.
Final Score
Oakland A’s 4, New York Mets 3 (11 innings)
Game 1 Summary
A game that had everything—clutch hitting, a devastating injury, a late-inning comeback, and walk-off heroics—ends with Mike and Lance’s A’s taking a 1-0 series lead. For John’s Mets, the loss is a tough one after holding a late three-run advantage, but the series is far from over.
Game 2 now looms large, with momentum firmly on Oakland’s side.
---
GAME 2 – WORLD SERIES
Shea Stadium – New York
The series shifted to New York for Game 2, as the Mets looked to bounce back after a heartbreaking extra-inning loss in Oakland. With the home crowd behind them at Shea Stadium, John’s Mets aimed to even the series and regain momentum.
This time, the Mets wasted no time taking control.
Early Fireworks – Mets Jump Ahead
In the bottom of the 1st inning, Mookie Wilson ignited the crowd with a two-run home run, giving the Mets an early 2-0 lead and setting the tone for the night.
The momentum only grew in the 2nd inning. Gary Carter stepped to the plate and delivered a massive three-run home run, blowing the game open and extending New York’s lead to 5-0.
Oakland Responds, But Too Late
The A’s began to chip away in the top of the 4th inning when Mark McGwire launched a solo home run to get Oakland on the board, making it 5-1.
Still, Mets pitching held firm through the middle innings, preventing any serious rally.
In the top of the 8th, Stan Javier contributed with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 5-2, but it would prove to be the final push for Oakland.
Closing It Out
The Mets bullpen shut the door from there, preserving the lead and securing a much-needed victory.
Final Score
New York Mets 5, Oakland A’s 2
Game 2 Summary
Powered by early home runs from Mookie Wilson and Gary Carter, the Mets evened the series at one game apiece. After a crushing loss in Game 1, John’s squad responded with authority, while Mike and Lance’s A’s now head into Game 3 looking to reclaim momentum.

Trufel worked a bases-loaded walk to bring in a run, cutting the deficit to 4-3. Santana followed with a sacrifice to tie the game at 4-4.

The final week of Season 14 is now complete and next week is Post Season. Best of 5 games each.
* Just a note on the season. Everyone picks a team prior to the season start and that would be the team they take to the Playoffs and World Series. During the season each week, everyone rotates new teams so that everyone gets a chance to manage all the teams. 3 games a night, 10 weeks.
* Lance/Mike finishing 1st place will face off with 4th place Lea. Lance/Mike will be managing the best team of the season, the 1989 Oakland A's with a team record of 18-12 and 107 runs. They also have the season HR Champion Mark McGwire with 9 HRs out of 30 total games. Ricky Henderson has been lighting up the base paths, Jose Canseco with 8 HRs. Great starting pitchers with Dennis Eckersley closing out. They are the highly favorited team.
* Lea will be managing the 1983 Chicago White Sox with a team record of 7-3 and 72 runs. The Sox ended up in last place but with smart playing, anything can happen. Fisk hitting the most HRs on the team with 4. Lea clinched the 4th spot by winning all 3 games last night in which was the only way she would make it, and she did it! Now its time for the playoffs with the 89 A's.
* Both new members David and John, makes it to the playoffs and one will be in the World Series. Their season records were a tie with 19-11 but when there is a tie, the best Run Differential breaks that tie, putting David in 2nd.
* David will be managing the 1985 Detroit Tigers with a team record of 18-12 with 106 runs. They have the same record with the 1989 Oakland A's but 1 run run shy putting them in 2nd place. Trammell hitting the teams most HRs with 5. They will be the favorited team in this series against the 86 Mets.
* John will be managing the 1986 New York Mets with a team record of 15-15 and 94 runs. The Mets finished the season in 7th place. Daryl Strawberry leads the team with 4 HRs. Hopefully the pitching holds up and Strawberry gets in the groove.
* Home Run Season Champions finished up last night. Every game that a pitcher gives up a HR, $1 goes to the season pot. Season winner receives $100 and the rest gets broken down in $50 increments with the remaining going to the last players on the leader list. 261 HRs were hit this season! Here is the breakdown:
Lance/Mike 34 HRs = $100
John 31 HRs = $50
David 31 HRs = $50
Lea 27 HRs = $50
