Deputy Recovers Stolen Motorcycle During Traffic Stop

On June 21, 2026, at approximately 8:18 p.m., a Sonoma County Sheriff’s deputy assigned to the Patrol Division observed a motorcycle traveling near Fulton Road and Occidental Road with expired registration.

Deputies conducted a traffic stop and contacted the rider, identified as 51-year-old Joseph Kahala. During the investigation, deputies discovered the motorcycle was displaying a license plate assigned to a different motorcycle. A records check of the motorcycle’s vehicle identification number (VIN) revealed the motorcycle had been reported stolen by the Santa Rosa Police Department.

The deputy determined the motorcycle had been “cold plated,” a tactic commonly used to conceal stolen vehicles by displaying a license plate assigned to another vehicle.

Kahala was arrested and booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility on charges including possession of a stolen vehicle and related violations. The motorcycle was recovered and released to its registered owner.

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to recovering stolen property and protecting our communities.

Today, we had the pleasure of hosting a group of students who earned a special lunch with the Sheriff through the Read On Sonoma program. Their dedication to reading and learning earned them an opportunity to spend the afternoon at the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office for a behind-the-scenes experience.

Thanks to the generous support of In-N-Out Burger, the students enjoyed lunch with the Sheriff before touring our Office, meeting one of our K-9's, climbing aboard a SWAT vehicle, checking out a Sheriff’s motorcycle, and even visiting the Sheriff’s personal office.

It was a great opportunity to recognize these students for their hard work while giving them a closer look at the people, equipment, and programs that help serve our community every day.

Thank you to Read On Sonoma and In-N-Out Burger for helping create such a memorable experience for these deserving students. We enjoyed spending the day with them and celebrating their achievement. 📚🚔🍔

Today (6/10/2026) at 11:38 a.m., Henry-1 was requested by REDCOM, Sonoma County’s fire and EMS dispatch center, for an injured mountain biker on a remote trail within Annadel State Park.

California State Parks Rangers were first to reach the injured rider and began providing initial care while additional resources responded to the scene. Ground crews from Santa Rosa Fire Department and Sonoma County Fire District accessed the park from different locations and worked their way toward the patient through challenging terrain. A Santa Rosa Fire Department UTV was able to bring personnel closer to the scene, but responders still had to hike several hundred yards along narrow single-track trails through dense tree cover to reach the victim.

Once on scene, Santa Rosa Fire personnel assumed patient care, assessed and stabilized the victim, and coordinated with Henry-1 on an extraction plan. Due to the patient’s injuries and remote location, he was unable to hike out, and the terrain prevented the UTV from reaching the patient’s exact location.

Using a 200-foot longline, the Henry-1 crew inserted a Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Paramedic directly to the patient’s location. After further assessment and coordination with ground crews, the patient was safely extracted utilizing the helicopter’s hot seat and flown to a nearby landing zone.

The patient was then transferred to a Sonoma County Fire District ambulance for continued medical care and transport to a local hospital.

This rescue highlights the teamwork and coordination between California State Parks, REDCOM, Santa Rosa Fire Department, Sonoma County Fire District, and the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Henry-1 crew. Through the combined efforts of ground and air resources, advanced medical care was delivered to the patient and a safe rescue was completed from a difficult-to-access area of Annadel State Park.
