Tonight we celebrated the life of an incredible member of this team: Mark Hubenette. This UTV will forever be dedicated to him and his contribution to our team. Mark’s radio callsign, SAR 119, will be retired from the roster and no other member will ever be issued that callsign. We lost you too soon, Mark, but your contributions and friendship will live on forever. You will be missed.

Another day of training in the books for Sonoma SAR. This time, we took a moment to take a team photo before wrapping up for the day. Thanks to Sonoma Sheriff for the Henry 1 backdrop!

Yesterday, our team practiced various search tactics and techniques at Willow Creek Campground: buffer searches, area searches, K9 flanking, etc. The circumstances of the incident may dictate varying techniques in order to be successful, so it is important that the entire team be proficient in each approach.

Tonight we conducted a full-scale mock search scenario in real-time to shake down gear, processes, vehicles, and mindset. During the course of the search, we performed a low-angle rope rescue of a simulated patient with a serious leg injury. Mock searches are a great opportunity for our team to test all of their skills in a single operation.

Our hard-working, dedicated volunteers of the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team were called out last night to find a missing 73-year-old man with dementia in Rohnert Park.

Using a heat seeking infrared camera, they spotted him deep in a creek bed in need of medical assistance.

Our Search and Rescue team undoubtedly saved a life last night, given the cold elements. Great job team!!!! Great find, your work is so appreciated!!

Sonoma SAR: What we do and how to support our work

As volunteer members of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Search & Rescue Unit, we are on call 24 hours a day to search for lost or missing individuals in wilderness, urban, and suburban boundary areas in Sonoma County and neighboring counties.

A callout could be anywhere from 2 minutes to 2 hours after initial investigations are underway, all depending upon factors such as the terrain and the lost person profile. To facilitate a search effort consisting of many teams, we utilize our mobile command center as a base of operations. The trailer is fully self-contained and serves as a location to conduct operations — around the clock if necessary. The team consists entirely of volunteers along with some paid staff with the Sheriff’s Office.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please visit our website for application details.

The unit also operates a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is used for fundraising efforts in order to augment its limited budget. Please contact us to learn more about how you can support the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office SAR Unit.
