It’s about time that decision makers take into account the full range of benefits provided by forests, such as clean air and water, carbon sequestration, habitat, and hotspots for biodiversity that the planet depends on. Wildfire is a naturally occurring process that forests have evolved alongside for millions of years. Old growth and legacy forests know how to regenerate after a wildfire. Some species even depend on it! After fires, regenerating forests provide habitat for animal and plant species, and will be better at sequestering carbon in the future than commercially replanted plantations We receive none of these benefits when corporate logging companies log forests after fires , leaving behind bare dirt, herbicides, and flammable slash piles. It’s time we let old growth and legacy forests recover naturally after wildfires, the way they have for millions of years!
