Loneliness is Curable: 👏

In addition to daily coffee and snacks, through our partners at the Council on Aging, the Salvation Army provides a hot lunch once a week. We provide all of this for just $25 per year, and the Salvation Army is non-government supported and relies solely on the generosity of individuals and the business community.

The Santa Rosa Salvation Army agrees with the quote in the June 14 Press Democrat article that “loneliness in older adults is like a slow-acting toxin.” But we believe too that “Loneliness is curable.” We encourage local seniors and their families to explore all of the warm and caring Senior Centers in Sonoma County and we especially invite the public to visit us at 115 Pierce St. in Santa Rosa to see how we are helping to cure this loneliness.

Close to Home: Sonoma County’s senior loneliness can be curable The Santa Rosa Corps of the Salvation Army understands the crucial need to support Sonoma County’s senior citizens so they may continue to live a life of dignity and care.

Great article on why Isolation can be detrimental to your health. Sonoma County is aging rapidly—by 2030, 35% of our population will be age 60 and older. We need better transportation and more programs for our seniors. I worked at the Alzheimer's Day program featured in this article.

“When you are lonely, you have poor health behavior, and you cannot achieve healthy behaviors,” Selvan said.

This can include, but is not limited to, poor sleep habits, increased stress, mental health issues, decreased immunity — making the person more prone to illness — and reduced muscle mass that can increase the risk of falls.

The emerging problem, if not addressed early, could have far-reaching and devastating implications, advocates said.

How you can take part in Earth Day.

Earth Day events take place in many countries around the world. Consult the official hub to see what is taking place close to you.

The official Earth Day website has a list of activities that you can get involved in to be part of the movement. You can also sign up to volunteer with EARTHDAY.ORG, become an Earth Day member and even register your own Earth Day event for people to take part in.

Agencies like NASA have a helpful Earth Day toolkit, which includes great resources and Earth Day activities for you to enjoy in the community or at home. The Old Farmer's Almanac also has 10 mini-activities that you can do, such as planting flowers to attract pollinating creatures like bees, stopping pesticide use in your garden, and managing your water consumption carefully.

Grateful to be a part of something meaningful for our community.

We recently gathered for our first Aging Well Professionals Coalition meeting — a group of dedicated senior service professionals committed to helping older adults and caregivers navigate aging with clarity, confidence, and support.

This collaborative effort is focused on what truly matters: planning ahead, understanding available resources, exploring options, and providing thoughtful caregiver support. From downsizing and transitions to planning for future health and lifestyle needs, our goal is simple — help families stay in front of their future, not react to it.

A heartfelt thank you to Santa Rosa Hills Senior Living for hosting our first meeting, and to Sean Baron and Shauna Burton for their support.

This initiative is the brainchild of Jana Adams and I’m honored to help bring it to life alongside such a dedicated group.

We look forward to serving seniors and families throughout Sonoma County — empowering them to make informed decisions and create a future of their choosing.
