Remembering Charlie Cunningham: A True Mountain Bike Visionary
We deeply mourn the passing of Charlie Cunningham—a brilliant innovator, master craftsman, and true founding father of mountain biking.

Alongside Steve Potts and Mark Slate, Charlie co-founded Wilderness Trail Bikes (WTB) in 1982. His contributions to the sport were so foundational that he and his wife, Jacquie Phelan, were rightly honored as charter inductees into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.

Charlie didn't just build bicycles; he re-engineered what was possible on two wheels. Decades before the industry caught up, he was pioneering advancements that riders today take for granted:

Aluminum Frame Pioneer: Long before it became an industry standard, Charlie championed lightweight aluminum frames.

The Modern Rear Wheel: He invented the 135 mm lower-dish rear wheel, establishing the spacing standard still used on modern mountain bikes.

The Blueprint for Tires: Charlie identified the fundamental tread design principles for off-road performance, co-designed the legendary Ground Control tire, and helped establish WTB's iconic tire lineup.

Mechanical Genius: He gifted the cycling world the Grease Guard Bearing System to extend component life, the powerful Roller Cam Brake, and the linear spring design that paved the way for modern V-brakes.

Ahead of His Time: Charlie’s signature drop-bar mountain bikes were a rare, striking sight on 1980s fire roads. Today, we recognize them for what they truly were: the brilliant blueprints for the modern gravel bike boom.

Charlie’s restless ingenuity, dedication to functionality, and gentle spirit changed cycling forever. Our deepest condolences go out to Jacquie, his family, friends, and the global riding community.

TRAILS! They’re how we experience the breathtaking beauty of Point Reyes—and there's an exciting opportunity to help shape their future. 🥾✨

Trails Forever is a historic collaboration between PRNSA, the National Park Service, and the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria to completely re-imagine the trail system at Point Reyes National Seashore. They are planning a trail network built for now and the future. 🗺️

They are looking at ways to:

🔄 Create new loops for better hiking and riding options.

📍 Provide better connections to the places people want to go.

🚲 Expand non-car transportation to make park access more sustainable.

🌱 Protect ecosystems and honor the land’s rich cultural heritage.

They want to hear from YOU! 🫵

Your feedback will let them know what’s important to you when you visit the park and what you’d like to see down the road.
