Last October I sat in the Colosseum and found myself staring at stones that have stood for nearly 2,000 years.

Empires have risen and fallen.

Leaders have come and gone.

Generations have passed.

Yet much of it remains.

As I sat there, I couldn’t help but think about a lesson I’ve been learning lately.

People are addicted to easy.

And easy is often the reason life stays hard.

What’s interesting is that most high achievers aren’t lazy.

I’m certainly not.

I work hard. I’ve always worked hard.

But I’ve realized that sometimes the easy button isn’t avoiding work.

It’s staying in the comfort zone.

It’s spending time on things we’re already good at.

It’s staying busy instead of being brave.

It’s choosing certainty over growth.

It’s avoiding the difficult conversation, the uncomfortable decision, the risk, or the opportunity that might change everything.

The comfort zone is sneaky because it doesn’t look like quitting.

It often looks like progress.

But nothing enduring was ever built by people who consistently chose comfort.

Not great schools.

Not great organizations.

Not great leaders.

And certainly not something that lasts for centuries.

Today I’m asking myself a simple question:

Where am I choosing comfort over growth?

Maybe that’s a question worth asking yourself too.

What’s one uncomfortable action you’ve been avoiding?

You cannot complain and lead at the same time.

One of the most important decisions you can make today is to be in a good mood.

Recently, I wasn’t.

A vendor was underperforming, deadlines were approaching, and I was frustrated.

What I didn’t realize was how much that frustration was showing up in my leadership.

Then someone on my team asked, “Are you okay?”

The look on her face told me everything.

She thought she had done something wrong.

She had no idea my frustration had nothing to do with her.

That’s when it hit me.

The mood I was carrying about a vendor was affecting the people I lead.

As leaders, our teams are constantly reading us.

They notice our tone.
They notice our energy.
They notice our attitude.

And when we’re frustrated, withdrawn, or negative, they often assume they’re the cause.

Our moods don’t just affect us.

They influence our teams, our families, and our children.

They shape how others see the world—and sometimes how they see themselves.

How you manage your stress, emotions, and attitude will either create unnecessary suffering or bring strength and stability to those around you.

Choose wisely.

Lead with intention.

One of the biggest leadership myths is that successful leaders are more motivated than everyone else.

They’re not.

They’re simply more disciplined.

When I was a school principal, there were plenty of days I didn’t feel like having a difficult conversation, reviewing data, or addressing a performance issue.

But leadership isn’t about doing what’s comfortable.

It’s about doing what’s necessary.

The schools and organizations that improve the fastest are led by people who consistently do what needs to be done—even when they don’t feel like it.

What important conversation, decision, or task have you been postponing?

Commit to completing it before the end of today.

Before your teachers sprint out the door for summer…

There are 10 questions every school leader should have answers to.

Not in August.

Not after summer.

Now.

One of the biggest mistakes leaders make is rushing into summer without capturing the lessons, frustrations, successes, and insights that could make next year better.

Before your staff leave, ask:

✅ What was our biggest win this year?

✅ What created the most frustration?

✅ What should we stop doing?

✅ What should we continue doing?

✅ What support do staff need next year?

✅ What should leadership do differently?

The schools that improve the fastest are often the schools that ask the best questions.

That’s exactly what we’ll be doing during our next Mentorship Monday LIVE session.

We’ll spend time:

* Reflecting
* Sharing ideas
* Learning from other leaders
* Reviewing your 10 Indicators Assessment
* Building a plan for your strongest first day back

📅 Monday
🕙 10:00 AM EST

Comment REFLECT and I’ll send you the registration link.

Remember:

Reflection turns experience into wisdom.

Been invested in the Carolina Hurricanes since 2017.

Season Ticket holders for five seasons.

Watching Rod take this franchise to the Cup has brought our family together at another level!

Looking forward to being back in NC to watch them lift the Cup again!

Crazy stat: Brindamour has been on the ice or behind the bench for 98 of the Canes 100 franchise playoff victories! You won’t find another leader more important to a franchise’s identify. Hall of Fame for sure!

Very honored to be named a Global Gurus Top 30 Education Leader for 2026.

Over the last 12 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with incredible leaders, schools, boards, and teams across the country.

What I’ve learned:
Leadership is not about having all the answers.

It’s about:

* building trust
* creating clarity
* developing people
* and staying committed through difficult seasons

Recently I started sharing:
👉 “12 Leadership Lessons from 12 Years in Business”

And the engagement and conversations around these lessons have been incredible.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the journey.

More lessons, podcasts, trainings, and resources coming soon.

Excited to announce that my teammate Lauren Stephens Watters and I will be presenting three sessions at the 2026 NC Association for Public Charter Schools in Raleigh, NC — and hosting an evening reception for school leaders!

One of our featured sessions is:
“School Culture by Design: 11 Cultural Systems That Drive High-Performing Charter Schools.”

High-performing schools don’t build culture by accident — they build it through systems. In this session, we’ll share practical frameworks to strengthen alignment, accountability, leadership development, and student success.

If you’ll be attending, we’d love to connect with you. And if you can’t make it, stay tuned for opportunities to bring these high-performing school systems directly to your school or leadership team.

Over the years, I have had opportunities to speak in important rooms.

Board meetings.
Legislative buildings.
Leadership conferences.
High-stakes conversations about the future of schools and students.

Those moments matter.

But this…

This is what stays with me.

The handwritten notes.
The student drawings.
The thank-you letters folded up and tucked away in my office.

Right now, I still have stacks of letters from students sitting inside my stand up desk.

When leadership gets heavy, I read them again.

Because they remind me that education has never really been about titles, recognition, or public moments.

It has always been about students.

A child taking the time to say:
“Thank you.”
“You helped me.”
“You believed in me.”

Those become the real trophies.

Not plaques.
Not awards.
Not applause.

Just fingerprints, crayons, messy handwriting, and heart.

And honestly, those are the things educators carry with them for a lifetime.

Today is more than a holiday.

It is a reminder that the freedoms, opportunities, and communities we enjoy are often built on the sacrifice of those willing to serve something greater than themselves.

Legacy is not built through comfort.
It is built through courage, service, resilience, and unity.

As leaders, educators, parents, and changemakers, we each carry a responsibility to honor those sacrifices by how we lead, serve, and invest in the next generation.

The greatest leaders are remembered not just for what they achieved… but for what they gave.

Today, may we reflect with gratitude, lead with purpose, and build a legacy worth continuing.
