The success of the world-class Santa Fe Opera largely hinges on young classical soloists like these, who are members of its prestigious Apprentice Program for Singers. Each summer, several dozen aspiring opera stars gather for 13 weeks of intensive, on-the-job opera training in the Tesuque hills just north of Santa Fe. The program is widely acknowledged as a springboard for launching young stars onto global stages. Annual acceptance rates for each cohort hover around 4 percent, making the Santa Fe Opera’s apprenticeship—which can be repeated once—one of the most desirable programs of its kind.
Santa Fe Opera Apprentices Take the Stage At 7,200 feet, Santa Fe Opera apprentices balance arias, altitude, chorus work, diction coaching, and the pressure of performing under the open sky.

"If you don’t live nearby, it’s hard to determine the next time your life might allow the bandwidth to visit this great magical realist relic of America. After all, it’s a place that’s been called “the Southwest of the Southwest,” tucked into a holler that’s about a 225-mile drive from both El Paso and Tucson (and a bit farther from Albuquerque), on the edge of the largest roadless wilderness area in the continental United States. So, when in Mogollón—ideally on a weekend between May and October, the only time most of the businesses are open—you’d best get to looking around." —Molly Boyle, 2025
