Criminals are making calls that display a legitimate phone number from our non-emergency lines (SFRECC). This is just another way to trick you into sending money.

Hang up and call the actual listed number for the business. Scammers can “Spoof” a phone number when calling out but cannot make the line ring back to them.

Scammers are calling and impersonating Santa Fe Sheriff’s deputies, advising that you have citations, summons’ and/or missed jury duty. They confuse, pressure, instill fear, and a sense of extreme urgency. HANG UP. Call the non-emergency line or number you know to be legitimate to verify the information provided if you are uncertain the claims are false.

These scammers direct you to make payment “easily” by going to a nearby Kiosk located at businesses, for example, Allsups so you can wire money to rectify the situation and avoid arrest. Please do not provide any personal information or stay on the phone with these crooks. DO NOT send or wire money. Call to verify the claims if you feel uncertain in any way.

Law enforcement WILL NOT call you regarding citations, summons or court appearances and we will never ask you for money to avoid arrest.

HANG UP. You can report the scam to our non-emergency line 505-428-3720. You can use our online reporting: https://santafecosonm.policetocitizen.com/Home or you can also report the scam to the internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov

06/01/2026

We again remind everyone that you will not be texted or called if you have a warrant and law enforcement will NEVER reach out to request payment from you. If you receive such a call or text that threatens you with arrest, don’t pay! Warrants cannot be rectified by payments or wire transfer. The scammers may threaten that they are prepared to send a deputy to arrest you if you do not make a payment …it’s not true, DO NOT MAKE A PAYMENT!

If you receive a call or message like this, do not give out any information, don’t’ pay, and simply HANG UP! If you are concerned it might be legitimate you can make a call to the court or our agency to verify. You can also report the scam to the internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov

Please remind your friends, family members and neighbors not to panic, share information, or pay and to simply hang up.
