What does “home” mean to you? More than 2,500 people from all over the world have added their voices to this universal question as part of the HomeStories Project: homestoryproject.org.
Inspired by National Geographic Explorer Paul Salopek’s global journey following the steps of our earliest ancestors, known as the Out of Eden Walk, HomeStories builds understanding and dialogue through grassroots storytelling and crowdsourced cartography the same way that Salopek inspires empathy and connection through “slow journalism.”
HomeStories is a citizen-fueled collaborative storytelling map that anyone can contribute to, anytime, from anywhere in the world. By practicing slow journalism, we increase empathy and understanding as we engage in thoughtful dialogue about race, migration, gentrification, cultural preservation, and other important subjects that shape our many definitions of home.
Please join us for a fun, informal place to share our stories of home. The Out of Eden Walk team will demonstrate how to add your own HomeStory to the HomeStories map. Participants will get to know one another and the different places each of us call home. During out time, we will:
Learn about journalist Paul Salopek and his 26,000-mile walk across the globe
Share stories of home from a variety of communities and places around the world
View a quick demonstration of creating a HomeStory on the interactive map
Create your HomeStory!
Please bring the following:
An original picture or drawing of the place in your community that feels most like home (the original picture can be a photo on your phone, a drawing, or a printed image)
Any image that represents you (a photo or drawing)
