It’s always ideal to test your water for contaminants and filter it to a neutral state. Because while plants require essential elements, too high amounts may work against them, stunting their full expression and lowering overall yield. Here are the top ten elements that can be too much of a good thing: boron, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, and zinc.

“Water quality counts when growing crops, especially in hydroponics. HydroLogic offers a wide range of purification systems for the job. A couple of great ones for hobbyists shown here. On the left is StealthRO (reverse osmosis) for absolutely pure water and respectable capture rates. If you have reasonably good quality tap water from your municipal supply, you might be good with the Tall Boy (right), which removes chlorine, sediment, most metals and some VOCs. Contact the good peeps at HydroLogic to see what’s right for YOU.”

Most of our filters have an approximate gallon capacity (look on our website, in the system manual, or the box it came in), which is generally what you can expect before needing replacement. However, water quality is the biggest factor in filter life.

For example, an individual with iron in their source water will not get as long of life out of their system as a person with no iron issues.

Reverse osmosis membranes will filter well for about a year, but the higher the ppm of the source water equates to membranes working harder to reject contaminants, which will eventually wear them out.

Posted • Our StealthRO and EvolutionRO systems all come with a 2:1 and 1:1 flow restrictor to choose from. The ratio is waste to product water, so it is important to know that neither restrictor will make more filtered water, only wastewater. We recommend that users go with the 2:1 flow restrictor almost always; this will produce more wastewater but greatly extend the life of an RO membrane.

Our best-selling High-Flow system just got better! Improved Dry Membrane design now with 20% increase in flow rate. Up to 1,200+ GPD!
Capable of producing more than 1,200 GPD (gallons per day) or 50+ GPH (gallons per hour) of pure water, perfect for medium to large hydroponic operations (Flow rates of RO systems are based on source water @ 65 psi/77°/500 ppm)
Highest flow rates and the most efficient system in the industry!
Lowers parts per million (ppm) of total dissolved solids (TDS) by 95%+
SAVE MORE WATER by running a 1:1 waste to product water ratio
Includes ChloraShield™ carbon filter for 100% chloramine removal
