Proud to be a Santa Barbarian. It’s history of strength and courage is inspiring. African-American activism doesn’t necessarily spring to mind when you think of Santa Barbara, but this town just wouldn’t be the same if it weren’t for the legacy of our African-American citizens during the past century. From the feed-the-needy efforts of Herman and Valencia Nelson, who founded the Foodbank of Santa Barbara. Let’s all be inspired for change!

Looking back at the last few weeks. It has been a roller coaster of emotions and still is. But one thing holds fast. Hope is ever apparent. It’s in those I speak to about racism, our experiences, what we can do for change and what we don’t want to repeat. Looking towards the future of change!

I am so honored to be a UCSB Alum and thankful to these black activist who on Oct. 1968 took over North Hall on the UCSB campus. It was supported by white students shielding the doors to allow the black students to continue their protest. Now we are able to study black history, black culture and other studies such as LGBTQUI. They made a huge change in the education system. Now we can make a change in ourselves, our families, the nation and the world. Let’s never forget we have power and we have it together. @ Goleta, California
