When wildfires threaten communities and homes, you might hear a lot about defensible space and the layer of protection it can provide.
Defensible space is the first line of defense for your home against wildfire.

Acting as a buffer between your structure and the surrounding area, having adequate defensible space can slow or halt the progress of fire when wildfire strikes. If you have good defensible space, it means you’ve managed the vegetation and any combustible materials within a 100-foot perimeter of your home, or to your property line, whichever is closer.

Recent studies have shown that the first five feet of defensible space can make a difference to prevent embers and direct flame contact from igniting homes.

- Use hardscapes like gravel, pavers, or concrete. No combustible bark or mulch.
- Remove all dead and dying plants, weeds, and debris (leaves, needles, etc.) from your roof, gutter, deck, porch, stairways, and under any areas of your home.
- Remove all branches within 10 feet of any chimney or stovepipe outlet.
- Limit combustible items (like outdoor furniture and planters) on top of decks.
- Relocate woodpiles at least 30 feet from residence
- Replace combustible fencing, gates, and arbors attached to the home with noncombustible alternatives.
- Consider relocating garbage and recycling containers outside this zone.
- Relocate boats, RVs, and vehicles away from zone zero to reduce fire risks.
