North Patrol deputies stopped a juvenile near Foothill High School in unincorporated Santa Ana for riding without a helmet and wearing AirPods in both ears.
The bike was determined to be an illegal electric motorcycle producing approximately 2,400 watts and exceeding California’s e-bike limits. The juvenile was cited for no helmet, unregistered vehicle, no driver’s license, and no proof of insurance. The e-moto was impounded for 30 days.
Parents were contacted, educated on the law, and advised that future violations could result in criminal liability. The juvenile was provided a copy of the e-bike/e-moto classification flow chart.
Knowing the rules is just as important as riding responsibly.

North Patrol deputies assisted CHP with a suspected DUI crash. The suspected driver fled the scene but later returned. Deputies determined the driver was believed to be under the influence and also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
Driving under the influence is against the law and puts everyone on the road at risk. If you plan to drink or use impairing substances, arrange for a sober driver, rideshare, or other safe transportation option.

North Patrol deputies continue proactive e-bike enforcement throughout Rossmoor and North County to keep our communities safe.
Recently, deputies contacted a juvenile riding an e-bike with his helmet strapped to the back of the bike instead of being worn. The rider was cited and educated on the importance of helmet use and e-bike safety.
Helmets are one of the most effective ways to prevent serious injuries in a crash, but they only work when they’re on your head and properly secured. Parents and guardians should ensure young riders understand the rules of the road and the importance of wearing safety equipment every time they ride.
North Patrol deputies will continue enforcement and education efforts to promote safe riding habits and help prevent avoidable injuries throughout Rossmoor and North County.
Ride smart. Ride safe. Wear your helmet.

Electric motorcycles operated on public roadways must meet registration, licensing, and insurance requirements under California law. Our deputies will continue proactive enforcement in unincorporated Tustin to improve roadway safety and ensure compliance with vehicle laws.

E-Bike Enforcement at Villa Park High School
Deputies observed several juveniles riding e-bikes recklessly on the baseball fields at Villa Park High School. The juveniles were detained for trespassing on a closed campus and investigated for possible vandalism to the school’s grass fields.
During the investigation, deputies discovered one juvenile was operating an illegal electric motorcycle equipped with a 4,000-watt motor capable of speeds up to 50 mph. The juvenile was cited for operating a motorcycle without a valid driver’s license, registration, or insurance. The electric motorcycle was impounded for 30 days.
A parent was contacted and advised of the violations. Parents and guardians should understand that some high-powered electric motorcycles are not legal for use on public roads or school property without proper licensing, registration, and insurance. They may also be held responsible for damages caused by their children.
Deputies will continue proactive enforcement efforts to address unsafe riding behavior and protect our schools, parks, and neighborhoods.

We understand California’s e-bike classifications can be confusing. To help residents better understand the differences between Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 e-bikes, a North Operations deputy created this simple flow chart.
Knowing how your e-bike is classified can help ensure you’re riding safely, legally, and responsibly. Take a look and see where your e-bike fits!
Remember: Any electric bike without pedals, with a motor over 750 watts, or capable of exceeding California e-bike speed limits is generally not considered a California e-bike.

A couple of smooth criminals hit the wrong note.
Last Friday, members of the North Directed Enforcement Team (DET) arrested an infamous social media couple after they allegedly found a purse at a local restaurant and chose to keep it rather than turn it in. What may have seemed like a lucky find quickly led to criminal charges and an arrest.
Finding lost property does not make it yours. If you find a purse, wallet, phone, or other valuable item:
• Turn it in to the business or property owner immediately. • If the owner cannot be located, contact local law enforcement. •Do not use, remove, or keep any contents. • Keeping or using lost property can lead to theft-related charges
Our deputies remain committed to protecting our community and holding individuals accountable when they choose dishonesty over doing the right thing.
