Let the fantasy books in our YA section take your imagination to new places this summer!
Today’s recommendation is “Dragonfruit” by Makiia Lucier.

📚✨ Hanalei of Tamarind is the cherished daughter of an old island family. But when her father steals a seadragon egg meant for an ailing princess, she is forced into a life of exile. In the years that follow, Hanalei finds solace in studying the majestic seadragons that roam the Nominomi Sea. Until, one day, an encounter with a female dragon offers her what she desires most. A chance to return home, and to right a terrible wrong.

Samahtitamahenele, Sam, is the last remaining prince of Tamarind. But he can never inherit the throne, for Tamarind is a matriarchal society. With his mother ill and his grandmother nearing the end of her reign. Sam is left with two to marry, or to find a cure for the sickness that has plagued his mother for ten long years. When a childhood companion returns from exile, she brings with her something he has not felt in a very long time - hope.

But Hanalei and Sam are not the only ones searching for the dragonfruit. And as they battle enemies both near and far, there is another danger they cannot escape…that of the dragonfruit itself.

✊🏽In our PM Press section: Let Freedom Ring 📚 Edited by Matt Meyer

Let Freedom Ring presents a two-decade sweep of essays, analyses, histories, interviews, resolutions, People’s Tribunal verdicts, and poems by and about the scores of U.S. political prisoners and the campaigns to safeguard their rights and secure their freedom. In addition to an extensive section on the campaign to free death-row journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal, represented here are the radical movements that have most challenged the U.S. empire from within: Black Panthers and other Black liberation fighters, Puerto Rican independentistas, Indigenous sovereignty activists, white anti-imperialists, environmental and animal rights militants, Arab and Muslim activists, Iraq war resisters, and others. Contributors in and out of prison detail the repressive methods—from long-term isolation to sensory deprivation to politically inspired parole denial—used to attack these freedom fighters, some still caged after 30+ years. This invaluable resource guide offers inspiring stories of the creative, and sometimes winning, strategies to bring them home.

Today’s volunteer staff pick is “American Education and the Modern School: A Francisco Ferrer Reader “ edited by Mark Bray and Robert H. Hayworth.

📚 ✨ Anarchist Education and the Modern School: A Francisco Ferrer Reader is a 2018 collection of writings by and about Francisco Ferrer, the founder of the Modern School movement, edited by Mark Bray and Robert H. Haworth. The book compiles Ferrer’s texts on rationalist education, revolutionary violence, and the general strike, alongside writings from his contemporaries, to present a more complex picture of his life and ideas beyond his martyrdom. It explores his anti-clerical, anti-state, and anti-authoritarian philosophy, which emphasized reason, dignity, and self-reliance, and includes his work on the Modern School (Escuela Moderna).
