Get ready to lock, pop, and break your way down memory lane! On May 11, 2026, The Frida Cinema in Santa Ana will host a highly anticipated theatrical anniversary screening of the 1984 summer blockbuster smash hit, Breakin’!
This unforgettable evening will double as a profound tribute to the film’s legendary star, the late Adolfo “Shabba-Doo” Quiñones, taking place on what would have been his 71st birthday. The exclusive anniversary event will be hosted by Vashawn Quiñones, Adolfo’s son. Following the screening of the film, Vashawn will conduct an intimate and exclusive Q&A session. He will share personal stories, explore his father’s groundbreaking contributions to hip-hop culture, and discuss how the man who famously brought the character Orlando “Ozone” to life earned the undisputed title of “The Godfather of Street Dance.”
Released in the summer of 1984, Breakin’ was a cultural phenomenon that took the world by storm. Grossing over $38 million domestically, it catapulted breakdancing and hip-hop culture from the underground club scenes of Los Angeles into the global mainstream.
“My father’s legacy is etched into every spin, pop, and lock you see in street dance today,” says Vashawn Quiñones, “Celebrating the 42nd anniversary of Breakin’ on his birthday is the perfect way to honor his memory, his artistry, and the lasting impact he left on dancers and fans all over the world.” Fans of the film, dance enthusiasts, and lovers of 80s pop culture are invited to experience the electric boogaloo magic on the big screen once again and pay homage to a true cultural icon.

First, a screening of the new documentary A World War II Fairytale: The Making of Michael Mann’s The Keep. This documentary provides a comprehensive look inside the making of a promising filmmaker’s sophomore studio film, and how perfection, indecision, endless workdays, and the death of a key crew member made for a movie best forgotten, only to be rediscovered years later.
With brand new interviews, rare archival material, and never before seen photographs, A World War II Fairytale transports audiences back to the early 1980s when Paramount Pictures just wanted another Raiders of the Lost Ark, but got director Michael Mann’s atmospheric and dreamlike adaptation of F. Paul Wilson’s novel instead.
Next will follow a screening of Michael Mann’s The Keep in its original 96-minute theatrical version, restored to haunting 4K clarity from the original 35mm negative. A supernatural nightmare unlike anything else, The Keep has earned its reputation as one of the great cult films of the 1980s. Set in a remote Romanian fortress during World War II, the story follows German soldiers who unwittingly unleash an ancient evil imprisoned within its walls—a presence more terrifying than anything the N***s could imagine.
Though plagued by studio interference, truncated edits, and a troubled release that left audiences with only fragments of Mann’s original vision, The Keep endures as a mesmerizing cinematic oddity. Its eerie atmosphere and unforgettable score by electronic pioneers Tangerine Dream have cemented its status as a beloved cult artifact.

In April 2023, we reached out to director Arthur Borman to see if he’d be interested in attending a screening of his film that we’ve loved since first seeing it in 1993. But with the director and two actors coming from either across the country and from across the sea, there so many variables that had to align. To make matters worse, there was no 35mm print of the film we could track down, and the only version of the film available was a crappy DVD that was cropped in a pan & scan format not suitable for theatrical viewing, let alone on our widescreen TVs today.
But then we found out that the original lab that processed the film over 30 years ago - FotoKem - still had the original reels. With a little time and a lot of money, FotoKem worked on creating a high definition 4K transfer that was suitable for screening. For the first time in over 3 decades, we finally have a copy of the film in a version that has been unavailable since 1993.
Tomorrow, nearly 2 years in the planning, we’re finally getting to screen one the greatest mockumentaries ever made. This is a film that pokes fun at the filmmaking process, and it does so cleverly, hitting the nail on the head throughout the film’s brisk 82 minutes.

Joining us IN-PERSON for a post-film Q&A is Director Arthur Borman and actors Michael Riley and Stephen Rappaport as returns TOMORROW, Jan 12th at 4PM to present AND GOD SPOKE, a hilarious, critically acclaimed 1993 mockumentary about low budget moviemaking.
AND GOD SPOKE follows a pair of wildly ambitious (and thoroughly inept) filmmakers who set out to create the definitive cinematic retelling of the Bible. Their mission: “And God Spoke.” Their reality: spiraling budgets, impossibly difficult extras, and a Moses who can’t quite remember his lines. It’s a witty, winking look at the madness of movie-making that will leave you questioning whether miracles are needed more behind the camera than in front of it ⛪️
Stick around after the screening for an in-person Q&A with director of the film Arthur Borman and actors Michael Riley and Stephen Rappaport!
Some fun comments from fans of the film:
-Hilarious film. I reviewed it when it came out
-Literally one of my top ten favorite films. Rewatch it at least twice a year!
-A terrific film, so funny--'remember Carl Reiner saying how much he loved it...Worth watching for Soupy alone. I have it still on vhs but I'll be there anyway. This is an Event!
-Gold standard of mockumentaries and movies about making movies. If I still lived in Cali, I’d be there in a heartbeat.
