👀 It might look like a tiny detail, but where the rein sits changes how the thumb - and the rest of the hand - has to work.

On the left, the rein sits closer to the base of the thumb. The thumb has to flex much further around it to secure the rein - and look at the knuckles too. The whole hand is sitting in a more flexed position.

Move the rein towards the middle third of the thumb and we can use more of a lateral pinch grip - similar to how we hold a key.

Now the thumb can gently oppose the side of the index finger, providing stability to the rein without needing to curl so far around it.

That small change in where the rein sits changes the mechanics of the thumb, the shape of the hand and how the fingers can work.

Where you put the rein determines how you can hold it.

This is exactly what we explore in the Riding Ready Reins Course - understanding not just where your hands should be, but why the way you hold the reins changes how they can work.

Big Announcement🎠

An opportunity has arisen that I cannot pass up. So... As of September 1st, One Ride Equine will no longer be accepting training horses or offering onsite lessons at Godwin Ranch. We will be relocating for this opportunity and will be unable to bring in outside training or lessons at all for the near foreseeable future.

I want to thank Godwin Ranch Equine Performance Center for being a great place for us to train and give lessons! I had a great experience and wouldn't hesitate to return or recommend them to anyone!

If you are currently taking lessons with me on a provided horse I will happily help you transition to a new coach/ trainer. Though I will miss being able to help you on your horsemanship journey. 😭

If you have been hauling your horse in for barrel lessons or participating in group barrel lessons, I will be happy to continue providing instruction at an arena of your choice within a reasonable distance. (We will be within an hr of where we are now).

One Ride Equine is not going away completely but we will be on hiatus for a while, and will come back with more knowledge and expertise to make better horses and riders ❤️❤️❤️

I have one open training slot for a tune up or patterning or seasoning on barrels.
