A remodel is about more than making an old pool look new.

This pool came to us with aged, yellowing plaster, surface pitting, damaged coping, and flooded lights. Once work got underway, we uncovered conditions that made this remodel more involved than we initially anticipated.

Projects like this don’t always go exactly according to plan. Existing conditions can reveal challenges that aren’t visible until demolition begins, and this one required some extra time, preparation, and problem-solving along the way.

But that makes it even better to see everything coming together.

From removing deteriorated materials and properly preparing the existing shell to installing new finishes, tile, coping, and fixtures, every step has been about getting this pool back where it needs to be.

This is what 40,000 PSI of water does to old plaster.

Before a pool can receive a new finish, the existing surface has to be properly prepared. Hydroblasting uses ultra-high-pressure water to remove old, deteriorated plaster and expose a clean, sound surface underneath.

Why go through all of this?

Because a new finish is only as good as the surface it’s bonded to. Leaving behind weak or compromised material can create problems with adhesion and shorten the life of the new finish.

It’s one of the messier stages of a pool remodel— but also one of the most important.

Good plaster starts long before the new plaster goes in.

Shooting the gunite shell is only the beginning of the curing process.

Once the shell is in place, we use sprinklers to keep the gunite moist. Concrete doesn’t gain strength simply by “drying”—it gains strength through a chemical reaction called hydration, where the cement reacts with water and forms the compounds that bind the concrete together.

If the surface loses moisture too quickly, that hydration process can be disrupted and the shell can become more susceptible to shrinkage cracking and reduced surface durability.

Keeping the gunite consistently damp during the early stages of curing helps control moisture loss and supports proper strength development throughout the shell.

It may look like we’re just watering concrete, but it’s an important part of building a pool correctly from the start.

Days 17–18 | The vision is starting to come together.

New tile is going in, coping is being cut and set, and the details that will define the finished pool are beginning to take shape.

There’s still work ahead, but this is the stage where the transformation becomes much easier to see — one tile and one piece at a time.

Follow along as we continue bringing this pool back to life.

A reflection of good design.

Sometimes the pool is what brings the entire backyard together.

Clean lines, rich textures, and still water create a reflection that doubles the visual impact of the home. It’s more than a place to swim—it becomes one of the defining features of the property.

A view worth building around.

Phase 2: Site Cleanup + Hydroblasting

With demo wrapped up, it’s time to get the pool ready for its new finish.

Phase 2 starts with a thorough site cleanup to remove debris left behind from chipping and demolition. From there, we move into hydroblasting—using high-pressure water to remove the remaining old plaster and create a clean, properly prepared surface for the next steps of the remodel.

It may not be the finished product yet, but proper prep is what sets the stage for a quality finish.

Follow along as we take you behind the scenes and show you what really goes into a pool remodel from start to finish.

Next up: getting this pool ready for new tile, coping and plaster.
