Your well-being is not optional.
You can push through for a while, but you can’t push through forever. Living in a constant state of fight-or-flight eventually takes a toll on your body, your mind, and your relationships.
I recently had the opportunity to interview Sylvia Fogel, a member of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee, and something she said really stuck with me:
“Your own well-being has to be part of the equation.”
As parents and caregivers, especially those raising children with complex needs, it can feel almost impossible to prioritize ourselves. But taking care of yourself isn’t selfish, it’s part of being able to continue showing up for the people you love.
For me, building a real meditation practice has been a big part of that journey.
What has helped you take better care of yourself?

😴 Sleep is everything in our house.
With a child who has autism and PANDAS, bedtime hasn't always been easy. We've tried a lot of things over the years — but melatonin has been one of the consistent tools that helps Theo (and honestly the rest of us) actually wind down and get the rest we need.
When the whole family's sleep is off, everything is off. And when we're rested, we show up better — for Theo, for each other, for the day.
We grab ours from Walmart — simple, affordable, and it works. Grab some here 👇

💤 For the parents who haven't slept in years...
If you are raising a child with autism, PANDAS, or epilepsy — you already know that sleep deprivation is not just an inconvenience. It is a chronic health crisis hiding in plain sight.
Studies show that 40 to 80 percent of children with autism have significant sleep disturbances. That means their parents do too. Night after night of fragmented sleep, early wakings, meltdowns at 2 AM, and the constant hypervigilance of listening for your child through the wall.
The science is clear about what chronic sleep deprivation does to a caregiver's body and brain.
🔴 Cortisol and inflammatory markers rise significantly after even one night of poor sleep
🔴 Cognitive function, emotional regulation, and decision-making decline within 72 hours of sleep restriction
🔴 Chronic sleep deprivation is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic dysfunction, and immune dysregulation
🔴 Parents of children with disabilities experience rates of stress comparable to combat veterans
We feel this in our bodies. In our joints. In our tempers. In our tears.
But here is something that has been quietly changing lives — and it does not require 8 hours.
Non-Sleep Deep Rest — also called NSDR — is a science-backed protocol developed from yoga nidra research and validated by neuroscientists including Dr. Andrew Huberman at Stanford. It involves lying still and following a guided body and breath awareness protocol for 10 to 20 minutes.
Here is what the research shows NSDR does:
✅ Restores dopamine levels in the brain comparable to a full night of sleep
✅ Activates the parasympathetic nervous system reducing cortisol and inflammation
✅ Improves cognitive function and emotional regulation even after sleep deprivation
✅ Requires no equipment, no supplements, and no special training
✅ Can be done during your child's nap, during school hours, or in a parked car
A 2019 study published in Nature found that non-sleep rest periods following learning consolidate memory and neurological recovery in ways that active rest does not. Your nervous system does not always need unconscious sleep — it needs stillness and safety.
For the parents in our community who are running on empty — I want you to try this today.
This is a 10-minute NSDR protocol you can access right now. Put in your earbuds. Lie down. Let your nervous system exhale.

You cannot pour from an empty vessel. And you cannot fight for your child from a depleted body.
This is one small thing you can do today. For yourself. For them.

He told me something I did NOT expect:
The hitting wasn’t always about anger.
It could happen when he was frustrated… but also when he was really happy.
After years of having emotions bottled up, finally having a way to communicate can feel like a volcano opening up. 🌋
The outlet is there — but the regulation and control aren’t always there yet.
And that part hits… literally and emotionally.
Apraxia is their biggest challenge.
Because progress in Spelling to Communicate doesn’t always look calm.
Sometimes, it looks messy before it looks better.
That’s something I think a lot of people misunderstand about progress.
Drop a 🔥 if you’ve ever seen an emotion come out in a way that didn’t make sense at first.
👇 What’s one thing people misunderstand about progress?
🎙️ The full episode drops in just a few hours. Stay tuned… you’re not going to want to miss this conversation.
They told us no. We kept going anyway. ❤️
It was so awesome to sit down with David Kaufer, a dad who is doing the work for his son, Stone.
David isn’t just advocating for his own child. He’s helping lay the groundwork for other families who want to pursue spelling to communicate and are looking for education, support, and a path forward.
This conversation gave our family something we needed: hope.
Hope to keep pursuing communication.
Hope to keep asking questions.
Hope to keep learning.
Hope to keep creating opportunities for our children to show us what they know.
It reminded me that every child deserves the opportunity to be heard, understood, and supported—even when others doubt what’s possible.
Hope isn’t naive when it’s backed by action.
Sometimes change starts with one parent saying:
“I’m not going to stop advocating for my child.”
And then another family follows.
To David, Stone, and every parent doing this work:
Thank you for going first. Thank you for laying the groundwork. And thank you for showing other families what advocacy can look like. ❤️
🎙️ The full podcast episode drops this Saturday.
If you want the link when it goes live, comment “LINK” below and we’ll make sure you know when the full conversation is available.
And to every parent advocating for their child:
Keep going. Keep learning. Keep asking questions. Your child’s voice matters.
What do you need most right now: hope, strategy, or someone who understands?
