April is Earthquake Preparedness Month. Take a few extra steps now that can make all the difference when it matters most.
Secure top-heavy furniture like bookcases, dressers, and TVs to wall studs to prevent tipping. Move heavier items to lower shelves and keep breakables secured or out of high-traffic areas.
Build or refresh your emergency kit. Include water (one gallon per person per day), non-perishable food, a flashlight, extra batteries, a first aid kit, medications, a portable phone charger, and copies of important documents. Donβt forget supplies for pets.
Create a family emergency plan so everyone knows what to do. Identify safe spots in each room, choose a meeting location if youβre separated, and establish an out-of-area contact. Practice βDrop, Cover, and Hold Onβ so it becomes second nature.
