A parent asked us recently if their child’s lisp could be related to their bite.
The short answer? Maybe. Sometimes tooth and jaw alignment can affect how a child pronounces certain sounds. Open bites, severe crowding, narrow jaws… these things can make it harder for the tongue to move the way it needs to.
But here’s the thing: not every speech issue is an orthodontic issue. And not every bite problem causes speech trouble.
That’s why we recommend an evaluation around age 7. Not to rush into treatment, but to understand what’s actually going on.
Sometimes we just monitor. Sometimes we step in. Either way, you get clarity.
