Just completed an Active Shooter presentation with an agency in Ventura County and would like to share with you some ideas we discussed regarding Active Shooter Kits (ASK.) When people think of an ASK, normally what comes to mind is a Plate Carrier and Rifle Resistant Plates, and if they can afford it, a Ballistic Helmet. In today's policing, this type of equipment is absolutely necessary and I hope all agencies consider allocating funding to purchase ASKs for their Officers. The very nature of donning an ASK most likely means LE are responding to some type of critical incident that most likely involves a suspect with a gun. We can never anticipate what type of gun the suspect may have, but recent incidents have shown them using semi-automatic - high capacity rifles. Knowing that Officers may be inherently exposed to gunfire; either from the suspect or your own gun, it is encouraged that you include a few other items into your Active Shooter Kit. A pair of safety glasses and ear muffs are often overlooked. These two very simple and inexpensive items can truly benefit your personal well being during an engagement. Another item to highly consider in your Active Shooter Kit is an Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK.) I can't begin to tell you how many Officers were saved by a very basic IFAK item such as a tourniquet or a hemostatic blood clot patch. Lastly, have a good quality bag to put all your Active Shooter Kit items into. If you have room in the front passenger seat or floor board, I recommend that's where you would keep your entire kit- ready to go. Stay Safe and Win the Fight!!
