Two Gold Rush Pioneers that Settled on San Ramon Land

In 1852, Joel and Minerva Harlan, having made their fortune from opening a prosperous store in Coloma selling supplies to miners, eventually purchased a parcel of Rancho San Ramon land. The current Gothic Revival mansion still stands on the original parcel of land that it was built on – on the corner of Westside Drive and San Ramon Valley Road in San Ramon.

A community member, Camille Thompson, posting to the San Ramon Patch in 2011 interviewed Bill Harlan, the great, great grandson of George Harlan. His great grandfather, Elisha, was Joel Harlan's brother.

Back in 2011, when this article was written, Camille mentioned that “It is the goal of the city of San Ramon and the San Ramon Historic Foundation to relocate the Harlan House near Forest Home Farms, to be incorporated in the historic park depicting life in San Ramon during the pioneer days.”

What happened to that goal? Now the house is at risk of not being appropriately preserved and that parcel of land is slated for commercial development. Another proposal to make a Senior Care facility in Bishop Ranch, an area set aside for commercial offices.

San Ramon: Commission to debate plans for senior care facility in Bishop Ranch San Ramon planning commissioners are set for discussions Tuesday on the proposed Belmont Senior Care Facility, which would consist of 177 units in a six-story building at Bishop Ranch 1-A.
