Villager Jane Piereth is a unique and adventurous member of Carquinez Village since she joined in 2019. She owns and boards a horse in American Canyon, served as a reserve for the Coast Guard on Mare Island, and she founded and runs Sailing Education Adventures (SEA); a Bay Area business that teaches people how to sail.
“I founded Sailing Education Adventures in 1984 to teach sailing,” she said over coffee at Raggs Cafe. SEA has youth and adult sailing camps in the winter and has won honors for excellence.
Originally from the East Coast, Jane comes from a long line of sailors, so sailing is in her blood. “My grandfather, father, and brother were all sailors or boat owners,” she said. Marriage brought Jane to the Bay Area in 1973, then she joined the Coast Guard in 1978. Originally stationed at Fort Point in San Francisco, she eventually transferred to Mare Island which introduced her to the beautiful bayside community of Benicia. “I fell in love with Benicia,” she said, smiling. Jane moved here in 2012. She also loves her two-year-old granddaughter, 'Makaia' (that means, "towards the sea"), who lives in Grass Valley.
Now widowed, Jane keeps herself busy riding and tending to her horse and serves on the SEA Board of Directors. Jane often attends Carquinez Village “Tuesday’s Cafe”, a weekly coffee meet-up in the Benicia Raley’s cafe. This weekly meet-up is a public opportunity to meet a few members and learn more about becoming a Carquinez Village member. “I really like the Village.” Jane added, and she thinks you would, too!

Sail Camp 2023 season is officially under way! Mini camp (pictures below) and Basic/Intermediate Sail Campers are having a blast learning to Sail this blustery and overcast week in San Rafael. And our youngest new boat girl, my 20 month old daughter, welcomed campers on Monday and was proud to be sporting her own PFD just like the "big kids" (shameless proud mama flex). More pics of Basic/Intermediate camp coming soon.
Everyone should check out the Marin IJ, Sports section, today! Michelle Slade did a super article on our Junior Counselor program, featuring past counselor and now CMA student, Dane Wells, and current JCs, Gus Gossett and Krystof Bruel!
This is why we've been doing this for over 40 years and been the model for many of the other programs around the Bay Area and beyond. Watching the delight and discovery that sailing brings to children if all ages is what makes this so important and magical of an experience.

Coming up this Saturday, SEA will be holding its annual Safe Boating Day and Sail Camp Open House! We will be at Loch Lomond Marina, head of A Dock (behind Andy's Market) with free Personal Floatation Devices to give away! Come get fitted for your own PFD.
Camp counselors will also be on hand with a Catalina and a Quest to take adults and children for "mini lessons". This is your chance to jump in a boat with an experienced sailor and try it out!
US Coast Guard Auxiliary will also be on hand to talk about boating safety, and do safe boat inspections of vessels.
Come check it out! Meet SEA members/sailors!
SEA has received a generous, anonymous donation to our scholarship fund, specifically for children from the canal district of Dan Rafael. If you know such a child who would like to learn to sail, age 11 or over, please let us know!
