Proposed Floating Dock System Gets Approval in Sausalito 06/16/2026

The Sausalito waterfront is in the news again, this time regarding a proposal to upgrade (this might be an understatement) the dilapidated docks at Turney Street. Sausalito is lacking sufficient public dock space and boat launch facilities; new docks could therefore be a boon to the popular tourist town. Last month, the Sausalito council voted to approve a proposal that entails replacing the broken docks and silted slips with a reconfigurable modular floating dock system.

The Pacific Cup Yacht Club race to Hawaii is starting July 6th. In today's 'Lectronic Latitude, sailor Ros de Vries, describes a tool she conjured up to help amateur navigators and armchair sailors find the fastest way to Hawaii. Who can help people who don't know what 'polars' are understand this sentence? "There’s a “polar efficiency” slider so the ETA reflects real crew-and-seaway life, rather than a flat-water fantasy, and a “route from my location” button that hands you a heading and tracks you as you sail." For the curious and folks looking for the fast lane.

Going Dutch — Huub's Pacific Puddle Jump - Latitude38 06/08/2026

Out now in the June issue if LATITUDE 38:

Experience, it is said, is a harsh teacher: You get the test first and the lesson afterward. That was certainly how Huub van der Mark came to sailing and cruising. A bit over a decade ago, in his late 20s, he moved from the Netherlands to New York to study acting. Instead, he got exposed to sailing, and became almost instantly enamored with the romantic notion of sailing over far horizons. He jumped in with both feet, crewing on other people’s boats in the Baja Ha-Ha and Pacific Puddle Jump. One thing led to another, and just 10 years after he’d first stepped onto a boat, knowing nothing, he did this year’s Pacific Puddle Jump on his own 38-ft catamaran — singlehanded.

Here’s his story of that journey.

Going Dutch — Huub's Pacific Puddle Jump - Latitude38 Huub van der Mark believed starting as a crew member, or boat hitchhiker, sounded like a good way to start learning about sailing.

Canadian Sailor Rescued From Dismasted Sailboat off Oregon - Latitude38 06/01/2026

A Canadian sailor was rescued on Friday after being dismasted and injured almost 500 miles off Tillamook, Oregon. The 74-year-old was singlehanding en route to British Columbia (B.C.) from Hilo, Hawaii, aboard his 29-ft sailboat Alice when he ran into trouble amid gale-force winds and 30-foot seas: Alice was dismasted, the unnamed sailor suffered a shoulder injury, and the boat’s engine was incapacitated (it is unknown if this was prior to, or as a result of, the sea state and weather conditions). Fortunately the sailor was able to use his handheld satellite communicator to reach the US Coast Guard. The USCG’s Northwest District watchstanders launched a rescue operation, monitoring the mariner’s position while maintaining contact with the vessel.
