This brass compass and leather case are made by artisans working with our partner Noah’s Ark, a fair trade organization in Moradabad, India. Star Checkers, the perfect screen‒free addition to your family game night handcrafted by artisans working with Asha Handicrafts. In a game of Star Checkers, also known as Sternhalma or Chinese Checkers, the objective is to be the first to move all your marbles across the board to the opposite point of the star, hopping over your opponents along the way. Meaning "hope" in Sanskrit, Asha Handicrafts is an Indian fair trade organization that has been working to promote the social and economic development of artisans throughout India for more than 40 years.

Crafted by African artisans in Western Kenya using traditional techniques, this soapstone chess set will become a conversation piece during play or on display! The board approximately 14 - 15 inches square inlaid with pink and white soapstone. Each piece is hand carved in either pink or white soapstone. Due to the natural characteristics of soapstone, the colors will vary. The game pieces are approximately 2.25 to 3.5 inches tall. The banana fiber box measures approximately 15.5 x 15.5 x 3 inches and makes for great décor and storage!
Story Behind the Art:

Each sculpture is artfully hand-carved from a single piece of Kisii soapstone, found only in the hills of southwestern Kenya. Mining the soapstone from surface hills is a labor-intensive process, using little to no machinery. Laborers works with shovels, picks, axes and machetes to carve out large soapstone chucks, which are then carved into beautiful art.

This card is meant to be treasured for years to come. Handmade paper beautiful enough to frame and helps ensure there was no slave labor in the supply chain.
